OUTSIDER VOLTAIRE SCORES AT MM

STRONG FINISH AFTER i
HOME TURN SCRIMMAGE

From LIONEL MARSDEN

MELBOURNE, Saturday. — Backers began badly at
Moonee Valley this afternoon, when the outsider Voltaire
won the opening event, the first division of the Nursery

Handicap.

rA FTER being mixed up in a scrim-
mage at the home turn, Voltaire
finished on strongly to defeat Camou
flage by three-quarters of a length,
with Rulemaker three-quarters of a
length away third.
On returning to scale, Unkovich,
rider of Camouflage, lodged a protest
against the winner. It was dis-
v missed.
Voltaire is a nice colt by Portofmo
and is trained at Caulfield by Jack
Fryer, who has not enjoyed the best
of luck for some time.
Camouflage, a grey son of Gay
Lothario, is a real aristocrat. On
looks alone he overshadowed the rest
of the field, but he is still very green.
Both The Rip and Auriga were
heavily backed, but disappointed.
The Rip had every chance, but was
-v never a possibility.
Auriga was one of the first to get
going and was always with the lead
ers, but hung out badly on the home
turn and lost a lot of ground.
