15 YEARS FOR QUONG
Judge's Explanation of
Sentences
Mr Justice Mann announced in the
Criminal Court today that the sentences
he passed on Harry Quong, 44, Chinese
laborer, yesterday were concurrent, not
cumulative.
Quong, therefore, will be required to
serve 15 years in gaol, not 20 years, as
understood by Court officials and the
press.
Quong was sentenced to 15 years' im
prisonment with hard labor for having
shot at Constable C. A. J. Coc at Highett
railway station on November 25 with
intent to inflict grievous bodily harm,
and five years' imprisonment for house
breaking.
His Honor did not say whether the
sentences were concurrent or cumula
tive. Counsel. Court officials and the
press assumed that the sentences were
made cumulative. In the absence of a
pronouncement to the contrary, where
two or more sentences are involved, sen
tences are usually regarded as cumula
tive.
