from their homes there, the Minister for
Sustenance (Mr Kent Hughes) said today
that he had no intention of extending
the practice of paying rents beyond the
j metropolitan .area except in special eases.
Rent, he said, was now being paid by
tlie Sustenance Department for about
1000 families,
"Many people demund special treat
ment from this department," said Mr
Kent Hughes, "on the ground that
special sums have been allotted for
.special purposes under the Unemploy

Act the Govcrnor-in-Council can spend
the whole of tiic money in relief works
and nothing in sustenance, if it is so
desired.
"This means that sustenance is not
established as a right under the Act.
It is for the purpose of relieving the
unemployed who are out of work ns the
| result of economic circumstances. Too
