AIR LINER DOWN
Passengers Escane
BRISBANE, Sunday. — Nine passen-
gers and a crew of three escaped un-
hurt when Carpenter Airlines' new
Lockheed 14 crash landed at Towns-
ville to-day, after the landing wheels
had locked in midair.
The pilot, Captain Harry Purvis,
showed considerable skill in skirting
the tarmac runways, and taking the
plane down on a grassy area. Both
props were badly bent under the fuse-
lage, and the fittings strained and
twisted. The passengers, when they
stepped from the plane, said they had
hardly felt the impact.
With Captain Purvis was Captain V.
Jackson, of the Carpenter line. The
machine left Cairns early to-day,
called at Townsville and 8, and left
son afterwards for Brisbane. One of
the pilots noticed the undercarriage
had locked and the wheels refused to
move. The plane then returned to
Townsville to have the defect reme-
died.
