An Amusing Contretemps.
LONDON. 7th Mav.
An invocation by the Government of
the Official Secrets Act has had a comedy
ending.
Three lobby correspondents learnt of
the Cabinet's approvnl of Lord Irwin, 's
ucimuiu JUI- auuioriiy io arrest Gandhi,
the leader of the civil disobedience move
ment in India, and published tho "story"
before the arrest was carried out. Mr.
MneDonald was furious at the leakage of
the news, and ordered Scotland Yard to
investigate it. Two editors refused to re
veal the source of their information, but
a third hinted that tho news canto from
a Cabinet Minister speaking in the
lobby.
The Government in consternation de
cided to drop the matter. Tho newspaper
men concerned, however, are demanding
that the Official Secrets Act shall not he
utilised to assist Government policy.
