A Relic 07 1853.—Saturday’s Bendigo Ad
vertiter says:—'.‘Amongst the; decorations for
the ball at the Town-hall is a fine flag, be
longing to Mr Donovan,; the ' town clerk. It
was ■ painted. : by. W..Dexter,' of London, a
resident of Bendigo id ' 1853, and obst. ii. con
siderable sum in those days.Thereia a large
. with ’' outspread-;f wings; > representing
Liberty, supporting' the Southern Cross, on
which .there' are : five-stars, representing', the .fire
colonies, and in the corner the Union Jack.
The well-known Latin motto, “ Vox popidivox
Dei ,” is also painted on the flag, and the links
of a chain, broken, meaning the abolition of
the odious license tax and other grievances of
the period.
