CLYDE
On Wednesday evening last, in the
Methodist Church, the Rev. Semmens
gave an illustrated lantern lecture on
“ Wrecks on the Cornish "Coast.” There
was. a good attendance, and the
lecture proved very interesting and
.entertaining. The* lecturer * could
speak with authority on the subject,
as he was brought up in the district
adjacent to the scene of some of the
disasters. -A collection was taken in
aid of Church funds, and at the re
quest of the audience another -lecture
will probably take place in November.
Mr. and Mrs. J. Collins and family,
who have-been in- business here, and
had charge of the local Post Office for
some years, and who are leaving to
take up residence .in the suburbs,
were entertained at . a
social on. Friday evening last. The
Mechanics’ Institute hall was crowded,
and a pleasant evening was spent in
dancing and enjoying musical and elo
cutionary items, rendered by Miss
Hardy, Miss Hunter, .Mrs. Heathcote
and Mr. Crabbe. During the evening
the guests were presented with a
beautiful case of cutlery, suitably in
scribed. Mr. Croskell made -the pre
sentation, and in a concise speech
(minus flattery) eulogised the good
qualities of'the departing guests. He
was supported by Mr. Crabbe,. Mr.
Wenn, and Mr, Myring, who spoke on
behalf of different bodies. ; Miss, Raw
lings, of Devon Meadows : Horticultural
Society, made presentations of beau
tiful bouquets of flower-s-ptp,■Mrs.
Collins and Miss Jean Collins. Miss
M. Hedley presented' : Mrs.' Collins
with a magnificent : bunch of violelfe,
on behalf of the chidren. The.ladies
provided the inevitable supper," which
was handed round and thoroughly ap-;
predated. Music for dancing was
supplied by the Gardinia " orchestra,
Mias Wenn, and Mrs. Grigg, of the
Boomerang orchestra. At the close
of the evening everyone joined hands,
and “Auld Lang Syne” was sung,
after which the National : Anthem
brought the happy event to a close.
The best of good wishes are being
expressed on all sides for the future
of the guests, who are leaving for a
rest to recuperate their health.
At a meeting of the ladies’ ' social
committee of the Mechanics’"lnstitute,
it was decided to hold a :gfand ball,
in October, to aid the funds’ 7 of the
Institute.
An exchange of books of the Library
has been arranged with the library at
Devon Meadows.
