The final event of the 25 miles road premier
ship, promoted by the Intei'-clnb Cycling- Asso
ciation, was "decided oil Saturday afternoon. The
start was, as usual, from the Commercial Hotel,
Footscray. to- a point 12£ miles out and return,
on the Ballarat road. The weatlier conditions
were xinfavopraijie at 3 p.m., so the start was de
layed for frilly anhour ; then the, nine"-athletes
got a shove off against a strong head wind. The
-road was by no means encouraging, though dur
ing the delay it had improved a little. After a
• wait in the windy weather, the .field appeared
battling home for all it was worth. F. .L. Mil
lard crossed the. line first, proving^ too • slick for
Munro Brothers, who were close, up,. "J,. R." be

well as foot work. - _

will occur- at Footscray, starting from the Rising
Sun Hotel, i on the Geelong road, at 2.45 . p.m.,

A fine acceptance has-been received by the
League of N.S.W.- foiv.the. Goulbitrh-Sydney race
(131; miles), . which is to be held- next Saturday,
September 7. Given fine weatherj it is anticipa
ted that fully 12<E l-iders will compete in this
great-road contest, which is to .decide who shall
be the. official N.S.W. representative in tlie forth
coming Dimlop road race .from Warrnambool to
Melbourne. The prize money amounts to £150.
the. major portion being donated by the Dunlop
Rubber 'Company.
An effort is to be made this week to reduce
Mr.- E. A. Pearson's Melbourne-Sydney cycle re
cord by a Sydney i-ider named J. Salvana. The
Melbourne-sydney record- "stands at 75 hours 5
minutes,, and was established as far. back as May,
1898. The trans-continental cyclist, Francis Fif
ties, recently attempted this record, and failed,
after putting up a good ride to Gvuidagai, owing
to the extremely cold weather met between Yass
and Goulburn. hhe distance to he negotiated'is
572 miles, and comprises good, bad and indiffer
ent roads, with plenty .of luiJ climbing- on tho
New South .Wales.side. v
Of the, enormous number of cyclists! now on tho
road, there'are. very few who pedal at all well,
excluding, of course, the road-racing, man, who
has been obliged. to study the question and mo
dify his- action until' he- finds himself getting
the -utmost out of lids - machine. The goneral
mistake is to ride with too high a saddle, and,
consequently, too: long abroach'; so that the pedal
can be' reached- only with- the. point of tho toes,
and oven .then, sometimes; only- by l-ockihg slightly
from side to side. Apart from tlio wasto of mus
cular power that goes on, there, is a danger of
the rider doing himself -some internal injury.
Good pedal action can only bo attained by fixing
the-saddle'so low that tlio liobls could, if roquir-.
od, ho comfortably plaoed on the pedals. When
the leg has-to be stretohod to its full extent in
order to push the pedal down, there is no mnrgjin
for ankle action, and there is, besides, a consid
erable) loss of lovorago. It is obvious that when
a limb is1 extended beyond a eortain point, thoro
is- so much loss power of extension'left,- and. as
the- point at > whioh-'power is most: required (and
the' want-of-.|it most folt) is at- the top and bot
tom of tlio- podn-l-stroko, ;tho- fully-extended log
is in in its, least -useful: position both as rogards
muscular power and crank leverage. This is a
matter of importance to ovory oyolist, for if eye
lists ,will only carefully study tiieiiv;.oortfeottposi
tion and practice vauklo action, the work of pro
polling , a machine' . .will bo found considerably
easier;: and' especially when hill-olimbing. ' •
Frank Kramer,, tlio American champion and
the fastest sprinter' in the woi-ld, is having a
. good time at Salt -Bake City, scoring 'in both
handicaps and soi-atoh l-aoos. I-Iis most rooeiit
