Sotheby f. tho famous art firm, will offer on .Tune IP several letters written by Captain Cook di^-cribing the first voyage of the Endeavour, to Mr. John Walker, a
partner in a hrm of \\ lntby shipowners, to whom Cook was apprenticed. Other let ters contain graphic descriptions of his second voyage, including a reference to Antartiea. saying— 'We are now 6ure that no southern continent exists there unless it is so near the Pole that the coast can not be navigated on account of ice. There fore it is unworthy of discovery.' They will also put up the original un published autograph diary of Ralph Clark, lieutenant of marines, covering the years 1TS7 to 1792, written during his voyage to Botany Bay in the transport Friendship. He also covers his stay in Australia and Norfolk Island. The first section of the diary is prefaced by a list of named con victs who were on bard the Friendship, with full particulars of each. There are some horrible entries, describing lashings of boy convicts.'
