Arkaba adrift in heavy seas

PERTH, Sat.: The 4,212-ton Arkaba is adrift in mountainous gale-swept seas 125 miles south-east of Cape Leeuwin.

The Arkaba. bound from

Port Adelaide for Hong kong, has again broken ioose from her tow. The tug Allegiance has lost sight of the Arkaba in a torrential rainstorm.

The tug's master sent this message to Capt. Boulton. local Navigation Department representative, as the Arkaba is a menace to navigation. Capt. Boulton has broad cast a message to shipping in the vicinity warning them of the helpless Ar kaba. Last night the master of the Allegiance advised that the Arkaba 's lights had failed. The Arkaba left Port Adelaide on June 22. for Hongkong on delivery to a new owner. She broke adrift when eight days out and south of Eucla. but was taken in tow again the following day. The Arkaba ran aground at Port Lincoln in Febru ary. 1952. and was declared a total Joss. She was later patched up.
