    AT the time of the historical Berry retrenchment scheme there was in existence a body of 120 gunners, known as the Victorian Permanent Artillery, which was mainly used as a training school for the Police Force, with very successful results. However, the Corps was disbanded, and in 1882 the Victorian Artillery, later known as the Royal Australian Artillery, was formed in its stead, and placed under command of Colonel Le Marchand, who was succeeded by Captain Ind, in 1884.
