    THE tilted pan is pouring liquid pigiron into the open hearth furnace. At intervals scrap-iron, rail-ends, etc., are thrown into the furnace from the other side. As the scrap melts the rust and dirt form slag, which rises to the top. The charge is kept liquid by firing the open hearth furnace with gas produced by special generators fired with coal. Before the charge is withdrawn certain iron alloys are added, which convey to the steel the necessary properties.
