    CONSTANTINOPLE comprises, besides the city proper (occupying a triangular promontory between the Sea of Marmora, the Bosphorus, and its inlet, the "Golden Horn"), the European town, north of the inlet, consisting of Pera, Galata, and Top-hana, and the Turkish town of Scutari, on the Asiatic side of the Bosphorus. Pera has long been the residence of the Ambassadors and of the principal Europeans. Galata is the merchant and shipping quarter.
