    THE above is a typical battery of the Victorian Militia Garrison Artillery, which took the place of the old Volunteer Artillery when Sir Frederick Sargood reorganised the Victorian Defence Forces. In drill, discipline, and good shooting some of the batteries approach creditably near the standard of the Permanent Artillery, which is usually stationed at the forts near Port Phillip Heads, where the militia also go into training every year to become familiarised with the modern guns which they might be required to serve.
