SINO-JAP. CONFLICT
OFFENSIVE
WANING
LONDON, Monday.
China's April offensive is dying
on all fronts, and the attempt
to recapture Canton evidently has
been abandoned.
The Japanese, however, do not ap
pear to be attempting to regain the
large areas around Canton, which
they lost last month, says the "Daily
Telegraph's" correspondent in Hong
Kong.
Though the Chinese failed to re
capture one provincial capital, the
offensive undoubtedly has been a
3'reat military success.
From a Japanese viewpoint it cost
thousands of lives ana £1 million
sterling daily.
The Chinese morale was un
questionably never higher, and
the Japanese never lower, than
to-day.
A Japanese report says that the
Chinese who were attempting to re
capture Nancha-ng, retreated in face
of a fierce Japanese attack, leaving
'500 dead. <
