100 Players For
Baseball
The Far North Coast Baseball Association
club competition will begin tomorrow with an
increased number of teams in first and reserve
grades.
Officials saifl last night that
over 100 players would compete
tomorrow.
Each club will field a first
and reserve side.
The draw is: Norths v.
A.G.R's., Rec. 8; Trevan's v.
Souths, Rec. 3, and Marist
Brothers v. 4ist Battalion, Rec.
11. Reserve grade matches will
begin at 1.15 p.m. and first
grade matches at 3.15 p.m.
Probably most interest to
morrow will centre around the
Norths-A.G.R's. match. Norths
will attempt to foil A.G.R's.
superior batting with the re
presentative combination of
Alan Smith (pitcher) and Tom
Wallbank (catcher).
A.G.R's. batting strength con
sists of Reg. Baxter, Marshall
Edwards and Russ Brown. Gor
don Dunn will again captain
Norths, while Bob Hatt has
been switched to second base.
Edwards, who will make his
debut with A.G.R's., is an ex
Sydney University catcher. His I
inclusion will enable Baxter toi
return to his favoured centre!
field position.
i Souths, 1950 major premiers,1
iwill meet minor premiers, Tre
vans. Pitcher Barry Kedzlie
will captain Souths and Len
Henley will lead Trevans.
Having amalgamated with
Wests, Souths will have the ser
vices of L. Mikkelson (third
bag), L. Harrison (first) and G.
Stoddart (short stop). Trevans
will field Morgan and Graham
as pitchers. Dick Trevan has
[been brought from centre field
'to catcher.
The "wooden spooners" of last
season, Marist Brothers and
41st Battalion, will meet at Rec.
11.
Brothers, Graham and Barry
Wappett, were doing well to
wards the end of last season
with Marist Brothers.
Now that representative first
bagman, Gilbert Crawford, is
injured, Barry Wappett's per
formance will be closely watch
ed by selectors.
The army team will fte
strengthened by the inclusion
of former South pitcher, A.
Nicholson. Barry Cooper and
L. Williams are also improvers
with the team.
