The Great Battle.
IMPORTANT FRENCH VICTORY.
PARIS, Monday.
It only now transpir;s that Gen
eral Von Kluck's misfortunes were
due directly to the defeat of. the
Crown Prince, who was badly beat
en, -the main body of his army retir
ing forty kilometres on the nights of
the 6th and 7th. Such retirement
was equivalent to a rout, but at the
time the French official despatches
merely, claimed it as a drawn bat
tle. Actually they had smashed the
flower of the German military power,
as in the plan of the
German operations the path
promising the greatest glory
was I'eserved for the Crown Prince.
The latter retreated .fighting in order
to save the remnants of his crippled
army from complete destruction.
His withdrawal compelled General
Von Kluck and General Von Buelow
to execute the same maaenuvre, hence
| the battle of ths Oisa and all the
subsequent fighting.
It is rumoured that the Cro.vn
!prince was wounded oil the 6th.
