NANKING, Wednesday.
The marriage of an 18-year-old
Chinese youth to the corpse of his
sweetheart, who had died of influenza,
attracted thousands of onlookers to
Wuhsing, near Nanking. J
The couple were betrothed before
birth, in accordance with Chinese
traditions, but were said to have been
deeply in lore with each other since
childhood. When the girl died the
youth threatened to commit suicide
unless he were married to the girl's
spirit.
PARENTS AGREED
To this the parents agreed and the
wedding ceremony was performed ac
cording to all the ancient rites. The
coffin of the girl was taken from her
home to that of the groom, being
decorated in red and gold, the col
ours . of the wedding sedan-chair.
.The .bridegroom went through the
elaborate ritual by himself, holding
a tablet bearing the girl's name to re
present her part in the ceremony.
He afterwards proclaimed his great
happiness and vowed he would not '
marry again as he believed in mono
gamy.
