The lighthouse at the entrance to Apia
harbour, Samoa, narrowly escaped destruction
by fire just before the R.M.S. Alameda
called there. The Jump mysteriously exploded,
igniting the whole of the upper part
of the structure. Fortunately the fire was
seen by some of the Roman Catholic missionaries,
who, with the assistance of their
school boys, speedily extinguished it.
The hearing of an appeal by Cardinal
Moran against an assessment under the
Land Tax Act, of St. Mary's Cathedral, Sydney,
and of St. Patrick's College property
at Manly, to-day, resulted in a decision
that the church and presbytery, and the
land on which they stood, being used for
church purposes, were exempt, but the
buildings and halls being used for school
purposes, could not be said to be used
exclusively for church purposes, and were
therefore liable to taxation, In regard to
the cardinal's palace and college at Manly,
his Honor held they were liable to taxation,
The revenue of the colony for February
was £602,554, being an increase of £68,610,
compared with last year, The largest increase
was on land tax, £51,485,
