MONTH'S PAY
VOLUNTEER CREWS
SYDNEY. Monflav.
It is understood that the owners will
gay their volunteer crews a month's
pay as compensation for their work,
and that they will be discharged im
mediately. It is stated on reliable
authority that the cooks at their last
uieeing decided to fine members who
forwarded the letter -published in a
newspaper criticising the conduct of
the dispute five shillings for every
line that appeared. It was further re
solved that any member seeking or
accepting employment outside the
union room would be fined three
guineas and 'suspended for 12 months
rrom membership.
Although the cooks' strike is over
no crews are signing on to-day owing
to the seamen objecting to being ship
mates with a bosun who joined the
steamer Ulooloo. The seamen stated
that as he did not throw in his lot
with his fellow unionists they will not
sail with him. Until this matter is
settled no seamen are offering at the
shipping master's office.
The secretary (Mr. Johnson) stated
to-night that the bosun had left the
Ulooloo, and the vessel would be man
ned as soon as a crew was called for.
