ENTERPRISE IN WIRELESS
The first radio exhibition at Lismore
is to lake place on Friday and Saturday.
It represents a progressive step in our
town, 'and the promoters are to be com
manded. Apart from the enterprise of
the undertaking, the exhibition will b'e" an
education to the people. They will be
enabled to get closer into touch with
the mechanism of those mysterious mach
ines which collect aerially- all sorts of
news, concert items, 'ate., from long. dis
tances. Visitors will be treated to an en
tertainment in addition to the attraction
of .the. purely-scientific, side.. Wireless is
an interesting study, and quite a number
of sets have been installed in- the -Rich
mond! River district during the last few
months. The coming exhibition will; tend
to increase the- interest of ' amateur wire
less operators, and the (general public
will be able to obtain a better idea" of" what
wireless really is. It may be that in the
course of years wireless plants will bo
as common in the home as the gramo
phone. There is a fascination about hear
ing someone speaking or singing hun
dreds of miles away, and that fascina
tion should be sufficiently strong to at
tract large numbers to the Lismore ex
hibition, the attendance at the same time
serving as an encouragement to local en
terprise.
; In Australia the general development of
wireless is looked upon as a matter of
great importance to the Commonwealth,
because, more than anvthing else, it of
fers, a means of overcoming internal and
external isolation. Wireless communica
tion has .a: very wide scope. Messages
have been exchanged betwen America,
England and Australia, and as far as this
country is concerned it is .a common thing
for wireless amateurs to receive on their
sets ;concert items and such like from aU
over, i the Commonwealth. Wireless ser
vices-to -Australia from across the sea
-jvill ' have to operate in competition Avith
'.tie existing cables; and it is essential
that they should be established and oper
ated on-.lines of the best commercial ef
ficiency; ; In order to facilitate this, it
i|: reported that the Commonwealth Gov
ernment';: has handed over the operation,
of all the commercial wireless services; to
a private company while retaining a suffi
cient measure of control through the
board of directors.
; Recognising .the value of the speedy
transmission of messages by wireless as
an adjunct to the: cabla, it is "stated that
• thfe ;'-TFQ3(Brarr Government. 'lias Contracted
with a cpmpany for the F.npply and erec
tion in Australia of two beam stations
for high-speed wireless telegraph service.
One of these statious Aviil communicate
direct with England arid tli3 other direct
.with Eastern Canada. The stations will
be erected on sites near Melbourne, and
will not be in operaUo-.i until early next
year, when they will r>e available for the
handling of public messages. It is under
stood that the British Government Avill ar
range for the erection of corresponding
stations in Britain, and that stations will
also be erected near Montreal. The Eng
lish stations will be operated direct from
London, and the Canadian stations direct
from Montreal; consequently, for the first
time in history a service will be provided
through which a message from one of the
principal cities of Australia will be sent
direct into the heart of London Avitliout
the use of relay stations en route, and
the same circumstances will exist for the
service betAveen Australia and Canada, in
| which dase the operator-in Melbourne will
f be in direct communication with an opera
tor in Montreal.
The Australian end of the service will
be made still more. complete, because the
capital city of each of the other States—
Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Hobart, Perth
ii nd probably Canberra and Darwin—will
be equipped with a wireless feeder station,
through which incoming and outgoing
messages will be received from and sent,
to the central control office in Melbourne.
This will provide a complete wireless ser
vice from London to all parts of Australia,
independent of any form of submarine or
overland telegraph. The promoters of
the wireless exhibition to be held in Lis
more on Friday and Saturdav will not
seek to receive items from London or
Montreal; nevertheless contributions will
come to hand from long distances such as
Sydney and Melbourne. The demonstra
tion will be under the auspices of Lismore
and District Radio Club, and over 60 sets
will be on exhibition. The Ballina and
Casino clubs are co-operating in the de
monstration, which from all points of
view will be unique. It may be mentioned
that a crystal set and head 'phones will
be.given as a prize to the child forwarding
tlie best essay on the exhibition.
