On Sunday last a preliminary meeting was
held at the Charlie Napier Hotel, for the pur-
pose of coosidering the question of the desira-
bilitty of forming a fire brigade for Ballarat. I
mentioned this subject in my last ,communi-
cation. The meeting merely being one of a
preliminary nature there were but a very few
persons present , a general meeting on the
question being fixed for Saturday next. Two
resolutions were pared declaring the necessity
of the brigade being formed.
For some six months past a party of Cornish
men have been working an engise hole right
opposite Bath's Hotel, Mr Bath himself having
a ·share in the speculation This shaft is, I
believe, nearly 300 feet deep. and has now bee
bottomed; I hare heard that the parties con
nected with it has been offered £500 each for
their shares, which offer they declined.

On Friday last a grand morning concert was
given at the Charlie Napier Hotel, on behalf of
the funds of the Mechanics Institute. It was
attended by some 150 of the most respectable
persons on Ballarat, Mr. Turner, the newly
appointed Stipendiary Magistrate, being pre-
sent. The entertainment was one of an excel-
lent and refined kind, and was under the direc-
ion of Mr. Paltzer. The singers were Mr Jo.
Gregg, Mrs. Hancock, Madame White, Mr.
Golding , and the inimitable Thatcher, whose
local songs are as piquant and amusing as they
ever where. Mr Gregg is a basso soprano whose
voice is rich and powerful, his execution being
brolliant and artistical. Madame White and
Mrs. Hancock are old favourites of those who
patronise concerts. The Montezuma Theatre ois
