MARITIME STRIKE.
FEDERAL ACTION LIKELY.
SYDNEY, Tuesday.—At the offices of the
Seamen's Union .to-day the words "stand
solid" -were chalked on all the "walls. Mr.
Wfal\sh, secretary of tlie lunion, expressed
the opinion that the men had nothing to lose
by holding' out. He declined to state what
developments were likely to .take place in
the immediate Suture, but he was obviously
optimistic as to the outcome of the dispute.
There is a strong impression that -the Fed
eral Government will take action in regard
to the strike in a few days, and that the
trouble will not be protracted longer .than
this woek. Mi*. Walsh added: "I quite be
lieve the Federal Government is likely to do
something. Certainly the shipowners are not
preparing for a fight to a finish, for in
no case, have .they attempted to man the
ships with volunteer labor, nor do we think
they will do so. " Inquiry was made At the
offices of a number of interstate shipping
companies in regard to the possibility of the
Bhips being manned by volunteer labor. The
general opinion expressed was that nothing
of the kind "would be attempted. "It would
not be worth while," remarked one shipping
manager.
