Auckland. December 4.
Captain Fairchild, of the ^Governmenft

The remainder of the crew were found
on the island in a desperate condition.
One man has been sent into hospital,
his toe having dropped off from ex

for 28 days on the island within a couple
of miles of a provision 'depot, but were
?unaware of its existence. They subsisted
on penguins and their eggs.

Further details of the wreck of the
Spirit of the Dawn show that she struck
on an outlying reef during a fog and
foundered before the boats could be
launched. The captain and crew ascended
the rigging. The second mate was stand
ing by a boat on the main deck, aad when
the vessel went down the boat floated. .

her, but Captain Millington and three
men were lost. The survivors built
tussocks, bub were too exhausted - to
explore the island, hence they missed the
provision depot. They had no fire, and
subsisted on penguins and their eggs.
They sighted four vessels' and' raised
signals of distress, but these' were riot
seen. The wrecked vessel was bound
from Rangoon to Talcahuano, in Chili.
