FIGHT IN
AIR
WEST FRONT
ACTIVITY
LONDON, .Jan. 3
A war communique issued in
Paris to-night says: "During the
day our patrols and reconnaisseurs
successfully fulfilled missions at
various points of the front. Our
fighter planes brought down two
enemy planes."
The British Air Ministry announc
ed to-night: "A number of enemy
"ht'ers engaged a' Royal Air Force
reconnaisseur in the neighbourhood of
the Belgo-German frontier. In the
course of the egagement the R.A.F.
machine was driven across the fron
tier, was forced down, and landed in
Belgian territory.,
It is reported that the plane, in
addition to being attacked by three
Messerschmitts, was subjected to anti
ircraft fire. T"e British plane landed
in flames. one member of the crew
being killed 4nd two other slightly
.injured.
'aris reports that a German .plane
flew over Paris and. Eastern France
last night. Anti-aircraft fire was
heard in the capital, and .radio sta
tions were closed down for half 'an
hour.
ARMIES QUIET
"The Times" correspondent on the
Western Fro. : says: - "The British
forces facing the Siegfried Line are
leading a quiet although arduous life:
All is peaceful, except for occasional
artillery duels and incessant patrol ac
tivity.
'"Most of t:-. ,stirring tales of
bloody clashes which filter from the
front exist largely In the imagination
o: patrols sturning' from their first
fcw hights' duty. in the baffling dark
ness of no-man's-land.
In another despatch "The Times"
correspondent with the French troops
says: "The French armies enter on the
New Year with umshaken faith in the
allied cause. This may be a truism,
but it cannot be uttered too often,
ar:' it is still essentially holding."
