GERMANS
RAID
SCAPA FLOW
LONDON, March 17
A civilian was killed and
seven others, including two
women, were injured when
German bombers raided the
Scapa Flow naval anchorage.
The Germans claimed dam
age to "several battleships
and cruisers," but the British
account revealed that minor
:damage was caused to only
one warship.
An Admiralty communique stated
that German aeroplanes at 7.50 p.m.
yesterday raided the fleet anchorage at
Scapa Flow.
About 14 reached their objective,
and a considerable number of bombs
yere dropped, one hitting a warship,
but causing only minor damage.
Bombs were also dropped on
land, and non-military objectives
were hit. One civilian was killed
and seven wounded, including two
women. Five cottages were dam
aged. Seven naval men were hurt.
Ship batteries, shore defences, and
fighter planes combined to drive off
the enemy. One enemy aircraft was
shot down, and others are believed to
have been damaged.
The Berlin radio in a special early
communique stated: "Our Air Force,
availing, itself of the results of re
cent reconnoitring flights, attacked
units of the British Navy in the base
at Scapa Flow last evening.
"Several battleships and cruisers
were hit by bombs and heavily dam
aged, and several air bases were at
tacked and bombs dropped.
"The 'planes completed operations
successfully, despite anti-aircraft and
fighter defence without loss."
A further communique was issued
by the German High Command. This
said:
"German planes bombed six British
warships in Scapa Flow and definitely
damaged three battleships and a crui
ser, and probably damaged two other
warships. They also bombed three
aerodromes and one anti-aircraft bat
tery."
The Berlin communique gave the lo
cation of the aerodromes attacked as
Stromness, Earth House, and Kirk
wall, all of which are in the Ork
'eys.
