Mrs. E. Dalton
Mrs. Ellen Dalton, 87, who died re
cently at Millicent, was born at
Nairne, and was married there at the
age of 18. Her husband was a far
mer at Nairne, but was forced out
of agriculture by successive seasons
of red rust. In 1871 they journeyed
to the South -East through the Coorong accompanied by their three
young children and Mrs. Dalton's bro
ther, the late Mr. Joseph Warr. On
arriving at Millicent three months
later they found that good work was
offering in the district, and decided
to remain. A camp was pitched on
the site now occupied by the Thyne
Memorial Hospital. Mr. Dalton died
45 years ago, leaving a family of six
children. The three surviving daugh
ters are Mesdames F. F. Bowman, J.
W. Towers and George Osborne, all
of Millicent. There are 20 grandchil
dren and 26 great-grandchildren.
