H.M.S. Orlando arrived here yesterday
- morning, and dropped anchor off Government
House shortly after 9 o'clock. Since it
became known that the new flag ship was to
- ' visit Hobart name has been considerably discussed,
and her appearance looked for with
interest by those who desired to examine her
fittings and armament She was thrown
' open to the public yesterday afternoon, and
a large number were taken on board by the
- steamers Success, Pinafore, and Taranna, :
which were running throughout the after
s noon. The Orlando left Farm Cove on Thursday
last at 11 a.m., and met with
head winds till Saturday morning, when
they veered round to the north-east Cape
r Pillar was passed at 4 a.m. yesterday. and
the anchor was dropped as stated above.
Since her arrival at Sydney the personnel of
the officers has been changed, several having
been drafted from H.M.S. Nelson to bear.
the names of those who have changed are
Rear-Admiral and Commander-in-Chief,
H. Fairfax, C.B.: Captain, Tynte F. Ham
well ; Burgoon, D. Atlock ; torpedo lieutenant,
Portail ; captain marine artillery,
Eastman. We have already given a detailed
description of the Orlando. She is what is
termed a first-class cruiser and a second
class warship. It is not definitely known
how long the vessel will remain here, but in
all probability her stay will not exceed 16
days.
The admiral will land officially to-day at
a 10.30 a.m. at the Prince's Steps. He will at
once be driven to Government House. As
. he lands a salute will be fired from the
Queen's Battery.
