PILOT TOOK BALI
SURRENDER
MELBOURNE.—The Japs. on Bali,
much publicised island of romance in
the N.E.I., surrendered to a R.A.A.F.
transport pilot on October 1.
Wing-Commander Harry Purvis
A.F.C., of Hilston (N.S.W.), of R.A.A.F.
Transport and Movements, flew a
R.A.A.F. Dakota into the island on that
day and accepted the local Jap. com-
mander's 700-year-old sword as a token
of surrender.
The trip to Bali was made to inves-
tigate a rumour that eight Australian
Ps O.W. were on the island. They were
found living in the hills.
Since the day of the Jap. surrender
they had lived like fighting cocks. All
were officers, and all well.
