LONDON Friday.
A message from Hankow says
the Chinese claim a great victory
on the south bank of the Yangtse,
west of Juichang.
They have driven back the Jap.
aneso four miles, and inflicted 4000
casualties.
The Japanese General Staff is re
ported to have ordered the occupation
of Hankow by the end of September,
but the front-line* commanders state
that it will be impossible until the
middle of October. They are meeting
stubborn resistance.
Aeroplanes have again dropped leaf
lets urging foreigners to take refuge
in the safety zones as soon as pos
sible.
The authorities promise to respect
the safety of foreign commercial
'planes provided they specify their
course;
The Japanese claim to have trapped
over 100,000 Chinese in the Lushan
Mountains.
