BRITISH
ASSURANCE
DISREGARDED
LONDON, Thursday.
The "Times" correspondent in
Berlin, says the German press dis
regards the assurance that Britain
does not desire the isolation and
encirclement of Germany.
This is possibly a polite way of
expressing incretlulity, adds the
correspondent. Headlines indicate
satisfaction that Britain is not
averse to Anglo-German conversa
tions, yet they do not mention a
reciprocal desire.
This reserve is doubtless due to pes
simism over the Spanish situation and
the future of Anglo-Italian relations.
.SUDDETEN PROBLEM.
No high hopes are cherished of a
Sudeten solution through the collabo
ration of Britain and France, whose
neutrality is regarded as the best help,
since they have not succeeded in in
jecting an equal measure of goodwill.
The Czechs' talk of a compromise must
be related to the Reich's determina
tion to obtain full Sudeten autonomy
and abandonment of the Russo-Czech
alliance.
tferr Hitler would probably be glad
of a solution not involving an addition
of the Sudeton area to the Reich
while Austria is still causing the pangs
of indigestion.
