UNO MAY
K TERMS
a HATTA
NEW YORK, Tuesday (A.A.P.). - There were indi
cations of compromise moves to-day as East Indonesia's rebel
leaders demanded that the entire Republic be placed under
military rule.
They dso demanded complete autonomy for the revolt
areas, on American Associated Press correspondent reported
from Djakarta*
The ultimatum was
presented to President
Sukarno. It came from
-LieuK-Colonel Ventje Su
-(iiual, Mer re"
volt.
, it contained these other
demands: Removal of the
Prime Minister, Dr. Ali
|aslroamidjojo, and his
.Cabinet, and a refusal to
'tolerate the presence of any
;Coniniunists in the Govern
ment,
i Colonel Sumual said the
rebels,would take matters
Into their own hands if
President Sukarno did not
teed their demands.
. Dr. Sukarno was also
told he must release -all
officers arrested in the
Sumatran revolt last year.
.'Theultimatum said East"
Indonesia had formed a
m army committee called
the "Sunlight Council."
' So far, the President has
fublicly ignored the revolt.
I President Sukarno has,
hveverls invited former
Vice-President Mohammad
Hatta, to meet him, usually
well . informed political.
»urces reported last night.
The invitation came as
reliable sources predicted
that President Sukarno will
be forced into a ''drastic
compromise" on his new
."guided democracy" pro
gramme for the country.
' Informants told United
Press that otherwise rejec
tion of his plan by the East
Indonesian revolutionary
Muncil and by Indonesia's
Mjor religious parties
risked civil war..
These sources doubted
fet President Sukarno
wuld take such a risk.
A meeting between Dr.
fukarnp and. Dr. Hatta'
fould have considerable
ignificance at present
when the country is split
up into two major camps
one made up of the fol
lowers of the President and
the other of followers of
Dr. Hatta.
Dr. Hatta stands for
anti-Communism and is a
constant target for Com
munist Party newspaper
jibes and attacks.
President Sukarno, on
the other hand, has twice
tried to get the religious
parties to accept a Cabinet
partnership with the Com
munists and that party en
dorses his leadership.
Political sources said the
President invited Dr. Hat
ta to a meeting after Army
Chief " of Staff, Major
General Abdul Haris Nasu
tion, .yesterday stressed the
need for the restoration of
good relations between the
two leaders in view of the
general deterioration of the
political situation.
Many political observers
do not . think that a simple
reunion "of Sukarno and
Hatta will solve Indonesia's
tricky problems of many
splintered parties, parochi
al provinces, religious ex
tremes and racial rivalries.
They said that in the
past few-months lines had
been clearly drawn where
before they were faint and
thin, and stronger words
had been uttered than ever
before by the once-united
revolutionary leaders.
