AUBURN
The annual meeting of the golf club
was held in the Institute. Officers elected:

of the hockey club; — President, Mrs. G.
W. Williams; vice-presidents, Mesdames V.
Leahy and W. McKnight; secretary. Miss

showed a credit balance of £10. Play
will 'commence on April 23.— Mr. J. Keuch
and members of his family had an un
pleasant experience as the result of an
electric light wire becoming detached
from an Insulator. Mrs. Keuch went to
a tank for some water, and on attempting
to turn the tap received a shock. Mr.
Keuch, not knowing the cause of the
trouble, also tried the tap, tout was
knocked, back. A son, Mr. A. J. Keuch,
then tried the tap, without success. An
investigation disclosed that an electric
wire was touching the guttering, and the
current had flowed along the downpipe
to the tank.
At the annual vestry meeting of St.
John's Church officers elected were: —

ALMA
Mr. P. Kelly presided at the annual
meeting In connection with the recrea
tion park. The secretary (Mr. A. N Free
bairn) presented the balance sheet which
showed a small deficit. Recent improve
ments to the park consist of a croquet
green and a turf wicket. Officers elected: —

AMERICAN RIVER
A recent severe gale, with a phenomen
ally low barometer, caused owners of
pleasure boats and fishing craft to experi
ence an anxious time. Dr. Carr's yacht,
The Fife, broke her moorings, but the sea
was too rough for anyone to go and secure
her. she went ashore, undamaged on a
sandy beach near Rocky Point, just as
Mr. Caxr. with a party of helpers, arrived
by motor car. Many trees were uprooted
during the gale, but no serious damage
was done.
ALAWOONA
In the recent crop competitions, Mr. W.
Paull, 6en., of Schell's Well, was awarded
first prize for the best SO-acre paddock of
wheat. He won a silver biscuit barrel pre
sented by the Brown's Well Show Society,
and donated by Mr. A. Houdon for the
district of Alawoona, and also a chiming
clock presented by the district of Alfred
for the best crop in the County of Alfovd.
The Brown's Well Show Society's trophy
was for the highest aggregate average for
three years. From -the 50 acres selected
Mr. Paull averaged 24 bushels. The class
of wheat was Nebawa. — This may be a re
cord; it is for this district. Mr. W. Paull
has a cow which has been in milk without
a break for nine years, and has been
milked twice a day during that period. It
was bred by Mr. Len. Ritchie's father, who
was a recognised breeder of cattle In
Lamsroo, and was a first calf.— Mr. W.
Wilkinson, who is trapping rabbits for
market, recently caught a kangaroo rat,
a very rare animal In this part of the
State. — At a recent meeting of the com
mittee of the Institute, it was decided to
sponsor the movement to form a literary
and dramatic club. The following mem
bers of the committee were appointed a
committee of management:— Mrs. E Clay

Vogt (convener).
BALAKLAVA
A concert in aid of the Royal Institu
tion for the Blind, North Adelaide, real
ised £13. The chairman' of the district
council (Mr. W. H. Manley) was In the
chair. Miss Valda Harvey was the accom
panist and rendered several soprano tolos.
' Messrs. G. Horton. and Richards also as
sisted. The concert was followed by a
dance. — In a match between the BaJa
klava and Blyth bowling clubs the scores
were:— Balaklava, 108 points; Blyth, ?9. —
The local tennis club defeated Erlth Hy
12 sets 113 games to 5 .sets 99 games.— i
A number of members attended the Bala
klava Golf dub's working bee. The fair
ways were being put in order by Messrs:

dragging a large railway rail oehlnd Mr.
Martindale's car. Mr. Bleslng was ifdiug
on the rail to keep it down when, the

car snapped, and he was thrown heavily

A medal donted by Mr. Kingdom for the
most Improved player during the 1931 sea
eon was won by J. Couley. — A surprise
social was tendered to Mr. and Mrs. A.
Prosser, of Mount Templeton, in the
Watchman Hall to celebrate their silver
wedding. Mr. A. King was M.C., and
Misses K. Gleeson, J. Smith, and Mitchell,
and Mrs. A Veitch provided the music for
the dances. Mr. J. P. L. Koepman paid
a tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Prosser and
their sons for the interest in the district,
and presented them with a silver cake-dish
from the residents. Mr. Prosser re
sponded. Two recitations were given by
Mr. R.. Newton.
The Balaklava spinsters invited nearly
300 guests to their ball, which was held In
the institute. The hall was decorated with
three shades of peach blossoms, which were
hang from three baskets from the centre,
from which strings of lanterns radiated to
each corner. Peach blossoms and ferns
were also on the wall, and the stage was
a mass of cosmos and white asters in
Jardinieres. The supper-room was deco
rated with pink, lemon, and black strea
mers latticed overhead, the centrepiece
being a large gaily-colored parrot hi a
hoop, hung from the centre. Paper cats,
parrots, and dogs, were hung from the
ends of the streamers, on the walls. A
largo toy dog and cat stood on the man
telpiece. Pink flowers In silver vases and
pink sweets biiskets on the table com
pleted the scheme. The Black Diamond
Orchestra provided the music. Each mem
ber of the committee wore a paper par
rot painted in water colors by Mr. J.
Wooler.
BOOBOROWIE
Useful agricultural rains have fallen,
but the reaping of lucern seed has been
seriously interfered with. Wood carting
is being pushed on before the winter rains
make the roads impassable. — The manage
ment sub-committee for the bachelors'
ball comprises Messrs. J. Branson, S.
Wigan, R. Siegert, D. Baynes, A. Grover
mann W. Turner (chairman), and L. J.
Resting (secretary).— At the biennial
meeting of parents to appoint a school
committee, the following were elected: —

BLANCHETOWN
The splendid rains during the past few
days, amounting to neatly IV2 inches,
were very welcome to farmers and
graziers. Farmers have almost completed
wheat carting, and are now seeding. — A
cricket match between Waikerie and
Woods Flat resulted in a victory for the
former by 87 runs. — Mr. Hewitt, of Ren
mark, has Iieen appointed head teacher
at the Paisley school, and . commenced
duty at the beginning of the week. — At a
meeting of parents of children attending
the BlaDchetown schoo}, the following
were elected members cf the school com
mittee for the 'next two years: — Mesdames
Sampson, Petersen, Dlttmer. and Winkles,
Miss Riddle, Messrs. Sampson and Brooks.
Mr. Sampson was elected chairman, and
Mrs. Dittmer secretary. — A double wed
ding took place in the Merbko Church,
when the Misses Meta and Gertie Noll,
of Wood's Flat, were married to Messrs.
Edwin Herrmann, of Wood's Flat, and
Charles Zander, of Black Hill, respectively.
The ceremony was performed by the Rev.
W. Juers, of Swan Reach.— A fall of 220
points of rain in the vicinity of Stone
field did considerable damage to the
roads and greatly inconvenienced
motorists.
BURRA
The annual meeting of the Burra Basket
Ball Association was presided over by the
president (Mr. A. N. Ratcliffe). The balanct

motion to the position of manager of the
Angaston branch. Mr. Max Pearce, man
ager of the Burra branch, spoke in high
terms of Mr. Brlnkworth, and regretted
losing such a valued member of his staff.

on Mies Herbert's behalf .—Heavy rain, with
strong wind, was experienced here during
the week end. The showers will greatly
benefit the young feed. The rain also
extended into the pastoral country to the
east at the town.
The president (Dr. Steele) presided at
the official opening for the -season of the
golf club. Mr. E. A. Haese, last season's
champion, drove a ball from the first tee
and declared the links open for the season.
Handicap stroke competitions were held,
and, although conditions were difficult
on account of the heavy wind, some good
scores were returned. .The men's event
was won by G. H. Robinson, whose score
of 85, with a handicap of. 19, gave him
a net 66. The women's competition, con
ducted over 12 holes, was won by Miss
Pearce. The best round off the stick was
done by G. C. Sangster, who returned a
card of 79.
BORRIKA
Mr. H. S. Green presided at the annual
meeting of the Borrika Football Club.
The secretary presented the balance sheet,
which showed a credit balance of nearly

to having the distance reduced to six
miles. — a bridge evening, arranged by Mre.
Brown in aid of the funds of the Church
of England, was held in the Institute.
Prizes were won by Mrs. J. Fisher end Mr.
V. V. Brown.
BLACK SPRINGS
The recent rains have brought up the
weeds, and farmers are cultivating In pre
paration for seeding.— A leap year ball In
the local hall was largely attended. The
music was provided by Misses Keelan and
Wllklns, Messrs. Hahesy, Fatchen, and
Kelly. Miss E. Wllklns was M.C., and Miss
A. Neill secretary.
BELALIE NORTH
Since the beginning of April 319 points
of rain have been registered locally. Feed
is growing rapidly, and farmers are pre
paring the land for seeding. A large area
will be sown this year. — At a meeting of
parents, presided over by the head teacher
(Miss Snelllng). the following were elected
members of the school committee for the
next two years: — Messrs. S. Napper .(chair
man), J. Ormsby (secretary and treasurer),
McEwin, and A. ' L. Jones, Mesdames A. L.
Jones, S. Napper, and J. Ormbsy. — Mr. and
Mrs. B. Lloyd were tendered a welcome
home on their return from their honey

BRIDGEWATER
The following were elected members of
the school committee for the next two
years at a meeting of parents at which
the head teacher (Mr. T. H. Bateman) pre-
sided:— Messrs. S. B. Ashby (chairman),
G. S. Fowler (secretary), Mrs. W. L. Guit-
beig (treasurer), Shannon, H. R. Jarrett,
and E. Radbone. and Miss F. Hicks. On
the motion of Mr. Ashby, seconded by Mr.
Fowler, a vote of thanks was passed to
the members of the retiring committee.
—The ladies' guild held a musical after
noon at the institute. Mrs. E. M. Tre-
nouth was in the chair. The programme
was arranged by Mrs. H. R. Jarrett, those
taking part being Mesdames Jarrett, Rem-
phrey, and Woods, and Miss C. Rudd. —
While Mr. K. Ashenden was driving a
horse and cart round a sharp corner, the
cart skidded and overturned. Mr. Ashen
den escaped Injury, but the vehicle was
damaged.
BEACHPORT
The recent boisterous weather, combined
with high tides, has undermined moTe of
the foreshore. The harbormaster's resi
dence is threatened, the fence only 10
feet from the wall of the house having
fallen into the sea and been washed
away. — A euchre tournament and dance
inlaid of the Justice and Wilson Benefit
Fund realised a profit of £7. A working
bee to cut and cart wood for Mrs. Justice
resulted In a 6upply sufficient to last her
through the winter. Mrs. McCourt gave
permission for the wood to be obtained
from her Woakwine property.
BRIMPTON LAKE
The recent rains have caused most of
the weeds to germinate, and farmers are
busy preparing for seeding. Judging by
the Quantity of super phosphate arriving
by the railway, a large area will be put
under crop this season. — After having
been closed for 12 years, the Brimpton
Lake school has been reopened. The
teacher in charge is Miss E. A. Bottroff.
At present there are 14 children on ''ihe
roll, many of whom have been receiving
lessons from the correspondence school.
To celebrate the occasion and to extend
a welcome to Miss Bottroff, a euchre
party and dance was held in the school.
The music for the dance was supplied by
Mr Don Harris. — At a meeting of parents

secretary of the Adelaide Hunt Club with
reference to proposed meet of combined

as well as horses for riding members. It
was decided that the Adelaide Club be
advised that the date most suitable would
be May 21, and a programme for the en
tertainment of visitors was arranged,
which includes a ball on May 20.
BALHANNAH
In connection with the charitable - ac
tivities of the Onkaparinga District Hos
pital, a 'posy' dance was held in the
Parish Hall for the Balhannah 'Hospital
Girl' (Chassie Carter). Fruit salads were
served by Mesdames Middleton and Cox
and Misses C. Pitt and Middleton. The
'posy' dance prize was . won by Mr. V.
Spoehr. Miss HakendorTs orchestra sup
plied the music, and Mr. L. H. Spoehr
was M.C.— The local Young People's Com
mittee In connection with the Methodist
Church conducted a Salmagundi evening
in the schoolroom. The prize was won
by Miss D. Pitt.— Owing to unsettled
weather. It has been found Impossible to
complete the tennis finals. It Is contem
plated to play them now on bitumen
courts, there being-only two In the asso
ciation.
BUCCLEUCH
A social was held In the local hall to
celebrate the anniversary of the birth of
Mrs. C. Kramer. The music for the dances
was provided by the local band. During
supper Mr. Mallin6on, on behalf of those
present, made a presentation to Mrs.
Kramer. Mr. F. Doecke was M.C,
CHARLESTON
The victory ball of the tennis club
proved highly successful. Messrs. C.
O'Malley and B. Klau were M.C.'s, end
Miss E. Poyner, Messrs. Max Zllm and A.
Poyner supplied the music. A waltzing
competition wag won by Miss TidsTell
and partner, and Mr. Adams and partner
were successful in the novelty dances. —
Miss E. Bottroff, who graduated from the
Teachers' Training College at Christmas,

more than £13 towards the hospital funds.
CLARENDON
A concert in aid of the Royal Institu
tion for the Blind was given in the local
hall. The programme was suppiled by
the Institution's concert party, assisted
by Mr. G. Horton (comedian) and Miss
Harvey (pianist). There was a good at
tendance. A competition, the prize being
a broom made in the Institution, was
won by Mrs. Shlpway.
CURRENCY CREEK
A social was tendered in the Institute to
Miss Pansy Holme, prior to her marriage.

The golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. F.
Cox. of Crystal Brook, was celebrated at
their residence, when between 50 and 60
relatives and friends met to congratulate
them. Mr. Cox, who is a son of the late
Mr. Benjamin Cox, of Tea Tree Gully, was
born In 1860 at White's Estate, Fullarton,
and was married to Miss Mary Anne Ken
nett on April 13, 1882, at the Crystal Brook
Bible Christian Church by the Rev John
Thome. He has lived in Crystal Brook
for 57 years, where he followed agricul
tural pursuits In the early days, being
manager for many years for Messrs. S. F.
Claridge & Sons. Mrs. Cox was the
daughter of the late Mr. William Kennett,
of Gawler. and .was born on December 6,
1856. She was a passenger on the first
passenger train that ran from Port Pirle
to Jamestown 54 years ago. The surviving
members of the family are Mrs. C. F. Joyce,
of Sandalwood; Messrs. B. Cox, of Payne
ham; C. F. and S. M. Cox, of Carrow, Eyre
Peninsula; and C. C. Cox, of Crystal Brook.
—In the local magistrates' court, before
Messrs. Mark Weston and A. G. Head,
Rudolph F. Laubsch, of near Huddleston,
farmer, was charged with having, at Crys
tal Brook, on or about December 15 last,
stolen a tractor cylinder head and gasket
to the value of £5, the property of the
Crystal Brook Carrying Company. Evi
dence for the prosecution was given by
Ray Percival Klopper and Sergeant W. O.
Sheridan. The accused, who pleaded
guilty was fined £5, with £2 1/ costs, In
default 14 days. Fourteen days were al
lowed In which to pay.

The annual meeting of the Clare

A collision, between a horse and trap
driven by Mr. R. R. M. Klingner, of Erith,
and a motor car driven by Mr. R. Til
brook, baker, of Balaklava, occurred at
the Junction of the Owen, Balaklava, Long
Plains, and Port Wakefleld roads. No one
was hurt, but the pole of the trap and
the windscreen of the motor car were
smashed, and the front mudguard ' and
hood of tl-e car damaged. — In the semi
final match of the Wooroora Cricket Asso
ciation, played at Preston, between Erith
and Preston, the latter made 355 for five
wickets declared (R. Daniel 102 not out,

KINGSCOTE
While Mr. Earl Boxer was working on
Mr. Wright's property, about 30 miles from
Kingscote, he cut off the thumb of his
left hand at the first joint. As he was
alone, he set out to walk to Kingscote,
but after he had gone 11 miles he was
given a ride fci the remainder of the jour
ney. Dr. Pattinson attended to the In

KEITH
A meeting of the Keith Football Club
was held In the institute. The president
(Mr. L. H. Densley) was in the chair. It
was decided to form the club again this
season with a view of joining the Tatiara
Football Association. Mr. S. Kardachi was
elected secretary, and Messrs. S. Kardachi
and C. M. Densley were appointed delegates
to the Tatiara association.
An entertainment was held In the Con
gregational Hall in connection with the
literary and social . club. Mr. S. Pengelly
had charge of the programme, and Items
were rendered by Messrs. R. Wright, A.
M. Densley, A. M. Dellow, H. J. Stevens,
C. Ellis, C. Cook, and O. Mclnnes, Mes

KOOLUNGA
A farewell social was tendered Mr. Not
man Lange in the institute. It was ar
ranged by the tennis club, of which Mr.
Lange has been a prominent player for
several seasons. Mr. T. Dyster, on be
half of the club, presented Mr. Lange
with a travelling nig. A dance followed,
the music being supplied by Misses E.
Nobel and A. Button, Mrs. A. G W.
Battye, and Messrs. C. H. Palmer, L. Muller

started farmers working their fallow 'in
preparation for- seeding. Early feed is
assured. Superphosphate has been coming
along steadily, but sowing has not yet
started. Farmers contemplate sowing

clation, played at^Gulnare, Brlnkworth de-'
feated JKoolunga.— Several car loads of
local girl guides and boy scouts journeyed
to Yacka to attend a concert in the Yacka
Hall in aid of the 1st Yacka Scout Troop.
Koolunga scouts assisted with the pro
gramme. The secretary of the Boy
Scouts' Association (Mr. F. J. Mills) and
Mr. Piper ? (cub commissioner) -were pre
sent. Mr. Mills assisted with the service
on Sunday, girl guides and boy scouts
being present In uniform.
KAPUNDA
The annual meeting of the Kapunda
Golf Club was held in the Institute. The

At a meeting in the Institute over which
Mr. G. S. Nlcoii presided, it was decided
to form a golf club to be known as the
Karoonaa Golf Club. Officers appointed:

KYBYBOLITE
The 6erni-nnal match in the Border
Cricket Association, between Hynam and
Binnum, on the Kybybolite oval, provided
an exciting finish. Hynam batted first,
and compiled 71 runs. Binnum scored 'ti,
winning by one run. Binuum had lost
six wickets for 66, and nine for 71. The
last man In made the winning run, and
his partner was bowled next -ball. The
final match will be played between Bia
num and Kybybolite at Kybyboiite.
KADINA
At the Kadina Magistrates' Court, on
the complaint of Sergeant A. G. Welling
ton, a charge of resisting the police was
laid against George Trevorrow, u half
caste, who was fined £5, with £1 costs,
for resisting, and £1, with £1 costs, for
drurkenness. The cumulative sentences in
default amounted to ten weeks.— Mem-
bers of the local Toe B. group assembled
to hear Mr. E. Bell, of the central branch,
lecture on the aims of Toe H. It Is pro
posed to establish a soup kitchen for
primary schx-l children during the winter,
and entertainments will be given to raise
funds— At the High School oval and ten
nis courts, a contest at cricket and tennis
took place between the Parents and
Friends' Association of the Kadina Me
morial High School and the students. The
fathers were beaten at cricket by the sons,
scoring 204 agianst 96. The daughters
were defeated by the mothers at tennis
with 8 sets to 7. Afternoon tea was
served.— The lifting of the restrictions on
the use of reticulated water has been
hailed with delight by local residents of
the three towns. Efforts will still be made
to Induce the Government to clean up the
Beetaloo catchment area, which is alleged
to be overgrown with grass and bushes,
retarding the intake of water. — The Rev.
Father C. B. Crowley, of Gawler, has -taken
over the charge of the Kadina Roman
Catholic parish, comprising Kadina, Wal
laroo, and Moonta, and has been heartily
welcomed by the congregations. Father
Crowley has taken the place of the Rev.
Father J. Blake, who resigned on account
of ill-health, after having been at Kadina
for 21 years.
LOWER LIGHT
The following were elected members of
the school committee for the next two
years at a meeting of parents held in the
school: — Mesdames R. Rowe and H. J.
Ciulgley, Messrs. L. L. Wasley, S. H. Davis,
K. Holland, H. Lemmey, and S. A. Pratt.
Mr. L. L. Wasley was subsequently ap
pointed chairman, and Mr. S. H. Davis
secretary and treasurer. — By the death of
Mr. E. L. Wylie, at the age of 86, the dis
trict has lost its oldest and a very highly
respected resident. — Recent rains In the
district have been very ^ght. Most fanners
are working fallow ready for seeding.
LAURA
Arrangements for the celebration of
Laura's jubilee as a municipality were ad
vanced a further stage at a meeting in
the town hall, which was presided over
by the mayor (Mr. J. L. Kennedy), when
the following programme was adopted: —
June 22— Visitors to be met at the rail
way-station; evening, reunion social at
the town hall. '' June 23 — Afternoon, foot
ball match, past . v. present, and cycle
sports; evening, plain and fancy dress
ball. June 24 — Morning and afternoon,
back to school and children's sports;

procession, race meeting, .entertainment
by Laura Thespians. '.June 26 — Morning
and afternoon, back to church and Sun
day-school; evening, sacred concert. June
27 — Coursing meeting; evening, church
and lodge reunions. June 28 — Morning,
street procession; afternoon, novelty
sports meeting; evening, old and new
dance night, finals ugly man and queen
competitions. The publicity committee's
recommendations that Mr. W. J. C. Cole,
an ex-mayor and an ex-Parliamentary re
presentative of the district, be appointed
the committee's city representative, and
that a souvenir be compiled and pub
lished were adopted. Mr. N. J. Hunn was
elected assistant secretary.
The presidents of the Northern District
Councils and Corporations Association and
of the ^Northern Fire Fighting Association
(Messrs. Lyons, M.P., and EL ,K. Moore),
have arranged that meetings of those
bodies shall be- neld at the same place
and on the same date in future, which
arrangement should result In a, saving of
travelling and economy of time. The for
mer association will meet at 10 a.m. on
the last Friday In May, and as it is its
half yearly meeting It Is anticipated that
It will be able to conclude its business
by about noon, after which the Northern
Fire ' Fighting ? Association will ? meet. —

A leap year ball, In aid of the crlckat
club, was held In the local hall. The

There was a large attendance. The music

Beale, Messrs. Geo. Williams, and H.
Twist. A feature of the evening was the
twilight and streamer waltzes. A Monto
Carlo onestep was won by Sister Mc
Donald and Mr. T. McCabe, and a lucky
spot onestep by Mrs. Franklin and Mr.
H. Tilmouth. Mrs. H. P. Russell was
M.C— Mr. T. French has left for Sydney
on his annual leave. He is being re
lieved by Mr. A. V. Harvey. Mr. H. P.
Russell, of the Railways Department, la
relieving Mr. A. Floyd at Beltana.
MINLATON
The annual ball in aid of the funds of '
the hospital, which was held In the In
stitute, was one of the most successful
ever held in Minlatoji, the large attend
ance making dancing difficult at times.
The hall was decorated with branches of
autumn leaves and flowers, and shades
In the shape of Inverted umbrellas in
toniugs of yellow and brown masked the
lights. Suspended from the centre of the
ceiling was a large basket of nutumn
tlnted dahlias, and baskets of Iceland
poppies were also suspended at each end
of the hall. A home-made supper was
served, the arrangements being in. the
hands of a committee, of which Mrs. A.
Correll was convener. The music was pro
vided by the 'Melody Boy&' from Yorke
town. The takings amounted to approxi
mately £40. The secretarial duties were
carried out by Mr. J. C. McMurray. — The
weather recently has been as cold and
boisterous as midwinter. During the week
end a high wind, accompenied by heavy
rain squall's, uprooted trees, unroofed out
houses, and did considecable damage ;to
gardens.
MORGAN
A farewell social, organised by the local
eports clubs, was tendered to Dr, and
Mrs. F. K. Mugfdrd In the Institute. A
large attendance was present. Mr. F. Wil
liams (chairman of the Morgan District
Council) presided. The speakers were
Messrs. F. H. Escott (Morgan Hospital),
W. H. Pennlngton (tennis club), A. Ij.
Dunk (institute and golf club), and K.
Dunk (Cadell). The chairman presented
Dr. Mugford with a leather suitcase, and
Mrs. Mugford ? with a leather dressing
case, from their many friends. Dr. Mug
ford responded on behalf of himself and

MARAMA
The question of trucking yards foB
stock was discussed at the annual meet
ing of the vigilance committee, and It
was decided that direct action be token,
to try and remedy this long felt want.
Mr. McConochie was elected chairman,
and Mr. S. Hutchinson was re-elected seo
retary. The officers controlling the bor
ing plant presented their report, and it
was agreed to replace tools, which liav»
been broken or damaged, and. to purchase
some new Sittings.
MOUNT TORRENS
The weather has been extremely stormy,
and fruit has been blown off the trees.
Tne rain has done a great deal of good,
and the grass is growing well. Up to date
this month 304 points of rain have fallen,
only a few points leas than the amount
registered in April. 1926.
MOUNT TEMPLETON
Most of the farmers are working their
fallow and some have started seeding,
as the season has opened with such nice
rains. There were up to 2\fe Inches In,
places, while not half a mile away very
little fell. The countryside Is quite green,
and conditions for lambing are favorable,

MYPOLONGA
The annual fete arranged by the com
bined Institute committees to aid of the
funds of .the Institute was well attended.
The president (Mr. A. Vogt) Introduced
Mr. Hunter, M.P., who declared the fete
open. The overdraft on the Institute has.
been reduced during the past year from
£698 to £635. The queen of fruits com
petition was won by Miss Miriam Lang
ley, representing grapes, who received
1,471 votes; Miss Audrey Kruger, who re
presented apricots, was second, with 1,151
votes; Miss Clemence Prosser (peaches),
third with 1,055; and Miss Ruth Homer
(oranges), fourth, -with 9fi9. The stall

It would be hard to estimate the
damage done by the wet weather during
the past fortnight. Drying fruit has been
out of the question, and apart Irom a
general darkening of the fruit on the
racks, mould has been noticed -on some
of the fruit. Several growers have started
treating their . fruit In dehydrators, but
most settlers ?. are hoping for a spell of
fine weather to complete . their harvest.
The moist conditions have affected distil
lery varieties of grapes also, and Gordos
In many instances have gone off to such
an extent that It is questionable as to
whether .they will be harvested, the mould
bolng, eo bad as to render them unfit for
wine-making. — Preparations are well In
hand for the annual Anzas reunion smoke
social on Anzac night. This year a com
bined Sunday service will be held at Berri
on April 24, when all sub-branches of the
district will take part. — Taking advantage
of the presence of Mr. E. Bromley, the
State Meteorologist, In the district, the
local branch of the Agricultural Bureau
arranged a meeting, at which Mr. Bromley
gave an address on 'The weather and
phases of forecasting,' which was Illus
trated by graphs weather maps, and
photographs of the various types of
clouds.
MERIBAH
The Meribah Tennis Club held a ball
In the Institute In aid of Its funds, which
will benefit to the extent of about £8.
The music was supplied, by the Loxton
Jazz Band, and Mr. H. Bow was M.C. A
foxtrot competition was won by Mr. J.
Ortloff and Miss L. Hamdorf, and a lucky
cap waltz by Mr. and Mrs. G. Petch. —
Prospects for the forthcoming season are
bright; feed Is plentiful, and early sown
crops are well established. Nearly en
inch and a half of rain has been registered
this month.

well and give promise of a very heavy
yield, from 5 to 8 tons to the acre being

affiliation was received from the Point
Pearce B grade team, which it was de
cided to grant, with the proviso that the
Arthurton ground be used as the team's
headquarters. Owing to the Ardrossan
Club again placing a team In the Yorke
Valley Association's competition, only the
second eighteen, from that town will play
In the association this season. The other
teams will comprise Maitland B, Arthurton,
Price, Petersville. and probably Point
Pearce B. It was decided to play three
rounds of matches this season, and to
commence earlier than usual, the initial
games to be played on April 16. To allow
for seeding operations, teams will go into
recess from May 14 to June 11. The
resignation of Mr. C. H. Gardner as secre
tary was accepted wltii regret, and a vote
of thanks accorded him. Mr. C. Alden
hoven was elected in his stead. — Miss M.
Sheard. who has been lieutenant in the
Girl Guides company, has relinquished
that position to take charge of a second

The president of the Mannum GoJf

the first ball. A mixed foursome was won

At the annual meeting of the golf club,
it was decided to go into recess until
more suitable grounds could be obtained.
— The institute committee held a dance,
at which the Misses Kirk's Orchestra sup
plied the music, and Mr. S. C. -Gill was
M.C. — The premiership match of. the
Broughton West Cricket Association was
won by Mundoora (minor premiers) by
10 wickets. Scores: — Merriton, 41 (J.
Nancarrow, four for 5; W. Altchlson, four
for 11); Mundoora, two for 46. Nancar
row took three wicKets with four balls.
Actually four wickets fell for four con
secutive . balls, but off the second one a
bye was attempted, and one of the bats
men was run out.

At the adjourned annual meeting of

TJhe annual united Sunday-school ser
vice In connection with the Narracoorte
Hospital was held in the town hall. The
stormy weather somewhat affected the
Attendance. Pastor Wilson presided. The
Narracoorte Municipal Band played selec
tions prior to the Bervice and when the
collection was being taken up. Miss Glrr
bach accompanied the singing on the
piano. Addresses were delivered by the
mayor (Mr. N. V. Wallace), the Bev. W.
M. Corden, and Mr. Petherlck, M.P.,
chairman of the hospital board. The
collection in aid of the hospital
amounted to £5 5/.
At a meeting of the committee of the
Narracoorte H. and F. Society, the secre
tary (Mrs. Needham) presented the finan
cial statement In connection with the
autumn show, which disclosed a small
profit. The secretary reported that the
mayor (Mr. N. V. Wallace) had given a
rose bowl for competition within the
Narracoorte Corporation for the best
flower garden, to be won two years in suc
cession, the committee to decide the con
ditions for the competition. The mayor
also had donated a trophy for the ex
hibitor gaining the most points at the
spring sho'v. A committee was appointed
to draw up the conditions governing the
gardens' competition ? The mayor presided
at the adjourned meeting of the sub
scribers to the Narracoorte Soldiers'
Memorial fund. The sub-committee ap
pointed to draw up suggestions for plant
Ing a lawn and flower beds round the
memorial submitted a scheme to cost
about £100. The report and plan were
adopted, and it was resolved that they be
forwarded to the corporation for con
sideration. It was resolved that if the
town council approved of the scheme, a
sub-committee be appointed to raise the
money and carry out the work, such sub
committee to consist of four representa
tives from that meeting and three repre
sentatives from the local sub-branch of
the Returned Soldiers' League. The mayor,

A cinema and musical entertainment
was held in the institute in aid of the
funds of the Narracoorte Caledonian So

The works account began the year with

of £58 18/10. The receipts were £73 14/8
and the expenditure £82 11/4. It was
decided that an effort should be made

To celebrate tie 80th anniversary of
the birth of Mrs. Susan Ann King, of
Nalrne, a social was held at her residence.
She was born at Coromandel Valley on
April 12, 1852, being the eldest daughter
of the late John Young Crossman. of
Sawesley, near Nalrne. On June 3, 1873,
she married Mr. William Frederick King,
of Nalrne, and for 40 years resided at
Kanlva, Victoria, where for 33 years her
husband was a councillor of the Shire of
Lawlolt, for nine of which he was presi
dent; of the council. All her life Mrs.
King has been an ardent supporter of the
Methodist Church.
ORROROO
To bid farewell to' Mr. W. H. McKenale,
who la leaving to live in Adelaide, a
gathering of business men was held -in the
institute .supper - room. Mr. ? McKenzle
came to Orroroo about 18 years ago -to
take charge of- Elder, Smith & Co.'s
branch office, and has made many friends

by his business methods; -and sporting
ability. He was a- very energetic worker
and a first-class citizen. Mr. Sam Rasheed
presided, and on behalf , of those present
handed Mr. McKenzle a travelling rug as
a mark of the esteem in which he was
held in the district.
OODLA WlRRA
More than /an Inch of .rain has fallen
since Easter.' Farmers have commenced
seeding, and- some crops are up. The
last consignment of last season's wheat
has been trucked to the coast. Since
the removal of the stack local residents
have been over-run with mice. Dairying
is making great headway, and cows are
in great demand— A number of local
tenders for wood have .been let by ±he
Railways Department and large quantities
will be dispatched to Peterborough in the
near future. — Babbits are plentiful and
trappers are at work throughout the dls-'
trict. The carcases are ' being sent to
the freezing works at Peterborough.— At
a meeting of parents held at the local \
school, Mrs. D. Ross was elected secretary
of the school committee.
ONETREE HILL
The 26th annual festival of the Morn
ing star Rechabite Lodge proved success
ful in spite of the squally weather which
affected the attendance at the athletic
sports on the McGlIp Recreation Ground.
A public tea in the Institute was well .
patronised, and later, an entertainment
drew a crowded house. Those who pro
vided the programme were:— Misses Roe
Charleon, N. and M. Avery, J.ames, Stevens,
and Worden, Messrs. Nltschke and Ern
Saxon. The arrangements for the tea
were supervised by Mesdames Watson and

Mrs. McKenzie prior to her departure for

Captain G. M. Mattsson, of the barque
Olivebank, entertained local residents at
a dance in the institute. The hall was
decorated with the ship's flags. Smith's

a cargo of wheat for Europe, the captain,
officers, and crew of the Olivebank were
entertained at a farewell ball in the in
stitute. Mr. R. Richens was M.C, and

The first of a series of socials to be
held under the auspices of tbe Metho
dist Ladles' Guild In the Methodist hall

There was a record' attendance at the
opening day of the season of the local
golf club. The president (Mr. W. D.
Evans), afteT declaring the links open,
presented Mr. Robert Nicholls with an in
scribed key and asked him to open the
new club house. The mayoress (Mrs. R.
M. Drake) drove the first ball. Com
petitions were won as follows :— Long drive,
R. M. Drake; approach and putt (50 yards),
W. Philip; putting competitions, Copeland
and Dreher. Mervyn niman, a pupil of the
Port Wakefield school, while chasing a ball
that went under a 6eat, knocked his head
on a bolt and cut it,- necessitating the in
sertion of three stitches.

dance in St. Alban's hall in aid of the

the unemployed has been done by Mr. and
Mrs. Crossley through the Central Mission,

Mrs. Crossley has been captain of the 1st
Port Plrie Company of Girl Guides, end
at a meeting of the troop, the mayoress
-Mrs. M. M. B. Middleton) on behalf of
the members, presented her with a silver
fruit dish and paid a tribute to her assis
tance in the movement. Miss Fong has
been appointed captain of the company,
and Miss N Bichards lieutenant. -The
Rev. D. Longbottom, who has been trans
ferred from the Risdon Park Methodist
Church to the Kingston circuit, was fare
welled by the members of the congrega
tion, Mr. H. W. Goode (chairman) pre
senting the guest on their bekalf with a
fruit dish and a set of knives. The chair
man's remarks were supported by Mr. A. H.

A meeting of the town council decided
to dispose of £4,000 worth of Common
wealth 6tock held by the town hall ac
count. It was also decided to transfer
temporarily £1,000 to the general fund so
that a similar amount could Joe repaid to
the electric light account off the £2,000
loan to the general fund. Mr. A. H.
Kieschlck (engineer) reported that the
new stone crusher had a capacity of 50
to 60 tons a day with two men in at
tendance. The best average of the old
plant had been 45 tons a day ? with five
men employed. — Inspector Leonard re
cently Intimated to the council 'that he
would not continue to supervise or carry
on the sanitary service, and the matter
wsa referred to the works committee,
which recommended to the council thai
-the Inspector's engagement terminate on
May 31, and that applications be called
for a successor. At the last meeting of
the council the Inspector, on being ques
tioned, explained that he had been under
a misapprehension regarding the Intention
of tbe council in connection with the
supervision of the sanitary service. He was
willing to carry on as before. His ex
planation was accepted, and he will con
tinue the work.— There was a large at
tendance at Kingston Park at the official
opening of the Port Plrie Golf Club's
season by the captain (Mr. C. H. Impett).

called to consider the application of the
Crystal Brook Club for affiliation. Messrs.
Gray and James attended as delegates
from Crystal Brook. In answer to a ques
tion. Mr. Gray stated that at present in
terest In football In Crystal Brook was
not very great, although in good seasons
the takings for an ordinary match had
been £22. It was thought, however,
that If a good team could be secured the
enthusiasm in the game would increase.
Mr. C. R. Hannan favored the inclusion
of Crystal Brook. He said that if they
were looking for any benefit to the asso
ciation, they would be likely to attain
that objective by securing more teams.
Messrs. W. Munro, Kitson, and Thread
gold, Port Pirie delegates, also favored
the Inclusion of Crystal Brook generally.
Mr. Threadgold moved that it' be a re
commendation to the Crystal Brook Club
that expenses Incurred by visiting teams
be match expenses. This was carried,
and, after a discussion regarding trans
port expenses, It was resolved that en
quiries be made and a decision about the
inclusion of Crystal Brook be deferred
until the next meeting. — At a recent meet
of the local Board of Health there was a
protracted discussion regarding a case of
endemic typhus fever believed to have
been contracted on business premises
where two cases of a similar nature oc
curred a year ago. The health Inspector
(Lieutenant-Colonel Leonard) reported
that rats, said to be the cause of the
disease, had been caught on the premises,
and had been examined at the Common
wealth laboratory here. Those tssts dis
closed no Infection from the rats. He
suspected that cockroaches might be the
cause of the outbreak. He had had the

premises washed and disinfected. At the
request of Councillor Dey. it was decided
to summon the health officer (Dr. John
ston) to the meeting. He stated that
when the two previous cases occurred
investigations made on. the premises did
not establish any connection between rats
and the disease. At the same time, ho
thought the disease was due to rats.
The cause of the djsease was not known,
although there was some connection be
tween rats and the disease. It wes
thought to be caused by fleas on the
rats. The solution was to get rid of
the rats. The inspector was Instructed
to examine the premises to- see If it
were possible to exterminate the rats by
fumigation, and report to a special meet
ing of the hoard. — Mr. A. J. Dennis, whose
homestead is adjacent to the Baroota re
servoir,, reports that heavy rains have
fallen In the district, and that water is
fiowing into the reservoir freely. Prior
to the recent rains the reservoir was
empty, but It now contains 36 feet of
water, more than it has held for nearly
four years. When full the reservoir has
a depth of 76 feet. — The town council has
decided to inform the Unemployed Belief
Council that It cannot accede to the sug
gestion of that body that it should subsi
dise the cost of rations granted to unem
ployed residents of the district by part
Mme employment.
The mayor (Mr. M M. B. Middleton)
presided over a representative gathering ot
citizens at the Institute to bid - fare-veil
to Mr. A. E. Moyle, who is leaving for Ade
laide after a residence here of 34 years.
The chairman expressed regret at having
to say good-bye to such a townsman as
Mr. Moyle had proved himself. He re
ferred to Mr. Moyle's fine war record, and
also spoke of hie prowess In many de
partzrfents of sport. The toast of 'Our
guest' was proposed by Councillor B. L.
Forgan, who said that Mr. Moyle had spent
practically all his life here. In his early
years he had made his name in athletic
circles and had shown his skill in music,
advancing in his studies in the latter until
he had become one of the town's moEt

PENONG
Nearly 2'fe Inches of rain have fallen
this month up to date, and farmers are
anticipating another good season. The
wheat stacks at the railway yard are
gradually becoming smaller. About 60,000
bags have been carted to Penong this year
up to date. Those farmers who still have
wheat to take off— and there are several
in the district — have a very remote chance
of doing so, as t»e winter seems to have
definitely set in. Some farmers here have
their new seed, up, and other are both
reaping and seeding. Many of the latter
were unfortunate in that they were late
sowing last year/ and, with Inadequate
machinery, found It well nigh impossible
to cope with the heavy crops this year.

hold out much hope regarding any altera
tion in the proup system. — A triangle rifle
match over '500 and 300 yards was fired
between MurrayvUle, Parila, and Pin
naroo on the Parilla range In showery
weather. Murrayville won with a, score
of 681 ParilJa being second with 663, and
Pinnaroo third with 647. Top score for
the match was made by A. E. Dolphin,
of Parilla, wltb. 74.
QUORN
At the conclusion of the business of
the Picbi Rich! Lodge, R.A.O.B., the
lodgeToo.Ti was thrown open to a number
of friends of Mr. J. Mclnerny, who wished
to bid farewell to him on the eve of his
departure from Quorn. Mr. E. McMahon
presided and referred to the high esteem
in which Mr. Mclnerny had been held dur
ing his residence in Quorn, and wished
him - prosperity and happiness in the
future. The chairman's remarks were
endorsed by Messrs. S. C. Middleton, O.
Noll, J. L. Pope, W. Hunt, W. Morgan, and
F. Pitman. Mr O. Noel, on behalf of
the Plchi Richi Lodge, presented Mr. Mc
lnerny with a fountain pen^and a set of
brushes, and the chairman, on behalf of
the residents, presented him with a

travelling rug. Items were rendered by

O'Brien was walking along the railway
station with. her son recently, she got' too
near the edge and fell on to the line. She
is '?about 79 years of age, and the fall
shook her up considerably. Fortunately «?
no bones were broken. She was confined
to her bed for a few days. — Mr. and Mrs.
O. Broad and their young daughter were
driving to the township in a sulky the
other evening when a lorry coming from
the township came Into collision with
them. The occupants ot the sulky were
thrown out. Mr. Broad escaped with a
few scratches, and the little girl was not j
hurt, but Mrs. Broad was seriously in- j
jured, and had to be taken on to the I
Eudunda Hospital.
Mr. p. H. Broad was driving a masher
dray, and when about two miles from the j
town, on the Burra-Bobertstown read, the |
dray came into collision with a car driven ;
by Mr. Edgar Wuch. The occupants of
the dray were thrown out. Mrs. Broad
was admitted to the Eudunda Hospital
suffering from concussion and injuries to
the head and neck. Several stitches had
bo be inserted. The injuries to' Mr.
Broad and Shirley Broad were only minor,
and after-treatment they returned home.
The driver of the car was uninjured, but I
the fenders of the motor were damaged. — ? 1

A social was held in the Methodist Hall
to bid farewell to the Rev. F. W. and
Mrs. Close, who have been transferred to
Hamley Bridge. Mr. A. N. Harris pre

contributed musical items. Presentations
were made on behalf of the Rechabite

RIVERTON
At a meeting of the Methodist Women's
Auxiliary Miss Clarke gave an address on
the aims and objects of the Travellers' Aid
Society. — The ceremony of opening of the
season of the Riverton Golf Club was. per-
formed by .the Rev, G, S. Clarke. More
than 20 members took part In the mixed
loursomes competition, which, followed. A
handicap singles tournament of tbe
Riverton Croquet Club was won by Mrs.
W. E. Bowden, who defeated Mrs. A. H.
Ralph, by 26 points to 23.— The annual
meeting of the Lower North Golf Group
was presided over by the president (Dr.
L. R. Mallen). The various clubs were
divided Into two sections, as follows:— a
section — Gawler, Kapunda, and Freeling;
B section — Riverton, Eudunda, Saddle
worth, and Manoora. Home and home
matches will be played with five men
aside, match play. Finals and premier
ship matches will be decided on neutral
grounds. The opening matches of the
season will be played on May 21, and the
premiership match between the winners
of the two sections on July 23. — Two rinks
from the Tarle'e and three from the
Saddleworth bowling clubs visited River
ton and played matches against tbe local
club, which defeated the Tarlee by '59
points to 50, but lost, to . Saddleworth by
48 points to 90.
RENMARK .
Less than, two-thirds of the raisins and
currants that will . require to be graded
and packed have as yet been' brought Into
the packing sheds. ' Otoing to the recent
wet weather, drying ? has been seriously
retarded, and in numerous cases where
dehydration has been resorted to, some ?
loss of color has been sustained. At the
dessert raisin dehydrator at Lyrup, vJiere
50 girls are employed and only white Mus
catel grapes are received, considerable
culling of the green fruit, which is mainly
supplied from -Renmark, has been found -
necessary .

The Snowtown District Council, having
been asked by the Children's Welfare and
Public Belief Departments to nominate a
doctor to attend to destitute persons, has
nominated Dr. White. The Unemployment
Relief Council has asked whether the
council would be prepared to subsidise the
cost of rations supplied to unemployed
residents of the town by providing part
time employment. The council decided
that the clerk should obtain particulars
of how the scheme is being worked In
other districts and submit a report to the
council for Its consideration. — Members of
the Snowtown Tennis Club held a suc
cessful Leap Year dance In the local hall.
Mrs. A. H. White was matron of honor,
assisted by Miss Blanche Longmlre. The
music was supplied by Mr. R. Megge, of
Blyth, and Mr. G. Bishop, of Clare. A
Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Mar
jorle Doyle and Mr. B. King, a lucky cap

At a meeting of the institute committee
it was decided to call a public meeting
to decide where the new hall should be
built. Two sites aTe under consideration.
One ad.iolns the northern side of the
police station, and is the property of the
Harbors Board. The other has been of
fered by a local business man. — A tennis
match between Swan Reach and Naldla,
played at Naldia, was won by Swan Reach
by two games. — A pigeon match arranged
by local pigeon shooters resulted In a
good day's sport. Mr. T. Shaw registered
two wins, and Mr. Moodle (Mallala) one.
—A euchre tournament organised by the
school committee was won by Mr. Boenm
and Mrs. Davis (Glenelg). — Good opening

SECOND VALLEY
The high seas during the recent rough
weather swept over the Jetty, lifting 40
feet of the decking Trees were blown
down and the telephone lines to Yanke
lilla broken. The men at the Govern
ment forest reserve had an uncomfortable
time in their . tents with the wind and
rain. Five Inches of rain has fallen
during a fortnight.— At a meeting of the

STRATHALBYN
Donald, the nine year old son of Mr. and
Mrs. R. Randall, died suddenly. He re
turned from school in his usual health
and early next morning was awakened
with what was thought to be gastric
trouble. The parents did not think it
necessary to 6end for a doctor until a
day later, when Dr. Willing ordered the
removal of the patient to the hospital,
where he died. The case was diagnosed
by the doctor as fruit poisoning and pneu
monia.
STANLEY FLAT
The following officers were elected at the
annual meeting of the amusement com

officer. — The frequent and heavy rain has
caused mould In drying raisins, resulting
In a heavy loss to growers. In a few cases
sultanas were not dipped on this account.
Many growers still have the majority of
their currents on the drying racks, and
under present conditions there seems little
hope of completing drying out of doors.
Drying with heat from fires Is being re
sorted to. The packing shed has had to
close for a time. A meeting 6f growers
has been called to discuss the installation
of a dehydrator there.
SEDAN
A leap year ball in the local hall,
organised by Mrs. C. P. Milne and Miss M.
Cooper (secretaries) and Mrs. L M. Hun
nerup (treasurer), was highly successful.
Miss I. Zadow was M.C, and the music
was provided by Miss A. Payne. Prizes for
streamer waltzes were won by Miss D.

Zadow. — General regret has been ex
pressed at the death of Mr. E. A. Schultz,
who died recently In the Angaston Hospi
tal. He was one of the oldest and most
respected residents of the district.— The
recent rains have assured a plentiful
supply of feed for the winter. Many
farmers have started seeding.
STRATHALBYN
At a meeting of parents the following

TWEEDVALE
Mr. Stanlford, M.P., opened the annual
pet show of the Tweedvale Higher Primary
School, which was held in the school
grounds. A procession of children in fancy
costumes, led by the school fife and drum
band, marched through the main street
to the school. Sweets, cake, ice cream,,
Jumble, and afternoon tea stalls were con
ducted by members of the children's wel
fare club. The bran pie was in charge
of the Girl Guides. Members of the
school commlbtee operated a shooting gal
lery, darts, races for the children, a mock
court, and other novelties. A game of
basket ball between the Nallsworth Central
and the Tweedvale combined schools re
sulted in a win for the visitors. The net
proceeds amounted to £25.
TUMBY BAY

At a public meeting In the Institute of
which pr. Wibberley was convener and
chairman, it was decided to form a liter

TRURO
To celebrate the first anniversary of the
Truro School Welfare Club, an old-tune
dance was held In the institute. The
music was supplied by Messrs. Wuttke,
Branson, Schluter, and Keightley, Misses
Hanley and Zbreski, and Mrs. Treloar.
Supper was served by members of the
club. The arrangements were carried out
by Miss Rodgers (secretary). The pro
ceeds amounted to £10.— The District
Commissioner of Girl Guides (Mrs. E. T.
Dean) visited the headquarters of the
local company to enrol new members.
Mrs. L. Rice was installed as lieutenant
in place of Miss O. Scott, who has re
signed owing to her early departure from
the district. Miss Scott was presented
with a box of stationery from the com
pany. Afternoon tea was served by the
guides, under the supervision of the cap
tain (Miss Rodgers).
TEATREE GULLY
The last of a series of dances organised
by, the cricket club in aid of its funds was
well attended, In spite of the stormy wea
ther. Special prizes were won by Mr,
and Mrs. Rowe, and Mr. and Mrs. Edgar
Neale. The dance music was supplied by
Mr. Cox's orchestra. .
TAILEM BEND
An autumn fair, lh aid of the Methodist
Church circuit funds, was held In the In
stitute. During the afternoon Mre. R.
Kerr sang, and In the evening items were
rendered by the church choir, conducted

A largely attended farewell social was
tendered to Mr. John W. Castlne in the
Foresters' Hall. Mr. N. Grace occupied the

The aunual meeting of the Waikerie

—The wet weather of the past fortnight
has interfered considerably with fruit dry
ing, nearly all the drying racks having
to be kept covered. For the first time
for many years the grading shed of the
Waikerie Co-operative Fruit Company has
had to close during the drying season
owing to a shortage of fruit. Sultanas
are becoming much darker in color on ac
count of the delay in drying. Gordo
growers who have had to dry their grapes
and were late owing to shortage of rack
space, are complaining of* mould develop
ing. This is only noticeable In fruit
dipped a few days before the rain, Gordos
that were more than half dry not having
been affected. Oranges have received
much benefit from the rain, which has
also assisted growers who planted cover
crops between their vines and oranges.
Farmers are cultivating and sowing, and
feed is making rapid growth. — At a meet
ing of the Waikerie Twilight Club in the
Soldiers' Memorial Hall, over which Mr.
J. Allen presided, it was decided to con
tinue the club during the coming season.
Regret was expressed at the early depar
ture from the district of the secretary
(Mr. A. E. Secomb), who has been ap
pointed manager of the Tallem Bend
branch of the State Bank. Officers elected:

WHYTE YARCOWIE
The recent rains have started a heavy
growth of weeds on fallowed land, and
farmers are cultivating to eradicate them.
A few farmers have begun seeding, but
It will not become general for another
we»k or two. Large quantities of super
phosphate have been coming into the dis
trict during the past few weeks, but in
many Instances farmers are reducing the
amount per acre.
WILLIAMSTOWN
Before her marriage to Mr. Roy Mewett,
Miss Jean Pilsell was tendered' a social
at the Church of Christ schoolroom. The
evening was spent In games and competi
tions. — Th* Ciiurch of England Sunday
school picnic was held at Springfield. In
the evening a well-attended concert was
held. — An earth tremor was recently ex-
perienced In the district. It lasted four or
five seconds.
WASLEYS

WALLAROO
At a meeting of the recently elected
school committee, the Rev. R. Woodger
was appointed chairman and Mr. E. W.
Dohnt secretary. The other members of
the committee are Messrs. M. H. Williams,
J Stanyer, H. A. Thorpe, J. Woods, and
C. Tonkin. — The bitumen road between
Kadina and Wallaroo has stood up well to
the heavy wheat traffic, but is now in
need of sealing. The Highways Depart
ment has asked the council to obtain
coarse sand and arrange for the delivery
of bitumen for its repair.— St. Mark's ten
nis club has obtained a 10 years' lease of
the land at te rear of the town hall. The
club intends to lay down courts and
generally improve the area. — A septic tank
system at the Wallaroo hospital is now
being installed, and the aeration tank is
being sunk on park lands abutting on
Lydla terrace. Householders In the vici
nity have raised objections to the tank
being ftlaced so close to their homes. Trie
council has decided to draw the attention
of the Archltect-in-Chief to the objection.
— To mark the opening of the season by
the associate members of the Wallaroo
Golf Club, a foursomes over nine holes
was played. It resulted in a tie between
Mesdames Bennett and Price and Mrs.
Stevens end Miss Cameron. A golf-croquet
competition was won by the president
(Mrs. P. J. Pengelley). — On account of the
shrinkage in its revenue the council Is
asking the Chief Secretary to relieve It
of the necessity of paying the annual
police moiety, -which amounts to about
£150.
The Allende Is loading wheat, and the
Nairnebank is discharging phosphate rock.
Several ketches from outports are loading
wheat direct into the Allende. The ketch
Broughton, which went ashore in the re
cent storm, Is breaking up badly, and it is
understood that the agents are arranging
for the unloading of the 900 bags of wheat
in the holds.

YEELANNA
A meeting of the Yeelanna Hall Social
Committee was held to receive the bal
ance sheet of the gala day celebrations
in October, 1930, also to consider the
resignations of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Olsen,
who have removed to Cummins. Mr. B.
Wilson presided. The secretary (Mr. J.
Ferguson) read the financial statement,
which showed that the committee had
had the supper room floored, and had
paid more than £30 to the local hall
trust towards liquidation of the liability
on the hall. The question was raised as
to whether the committee 6hould con
tinue to function, and it was decided to
call a meeting of ratepayers to consider
the matter, as it was at a similar meet
ing that the committee was formed.
Such meeting, if it decides in favor of
the continuance of the committee, will
elect two persons to fill the present
vacancies on it. — Seasonal conditions have
never been more auspicious, and farmers
are busy seeding. A hopeful sign of im
proved conditions Is the number of im
plements coming into the district.
