STEAM TO ADELAIDE,
TO THE current OF THE MERCURY.
SIR-We very long ago the idea of communication
with Adelaide by means of steamers was
spoken of here. Since then, so far as I am aware,
nothing further has been done in the matter and
as | have also heard] that an Adelaide firm have
some idea of taking the matter out of our idle hands,
I must presume that it will be the same as the New
Zealand trade, and that we are going to allow the
profits which might accrue from such a line of traffic
to drift into another channel,
? Of course, we can hardly expect any existing body
to make the attempt, but it seems to me an excellent
opportunity for a new Tasmanian company to make
a start. The saying, "No time like the present,"
appears very appropriate In this instance Summer
weather having apparently set in in earnest, and the
fact that our races, etc, will take place shortly,
might induce many to come here, if they could do
so at a moderate outlay of money and time. Hoping
that the idea will, at least, be thoroughly discussed,
I remain, etc,
Hobart Town, _ CHALDEA.
