CAROLIN'S WRITS.
A PEREMPTOKY DEMAND. _
Ill connection with the issue of writs ay
Cr. Carolin against the City Council for the
illegal vote of .£10/10/ to the jV£urray-Goul
burn Water Supply League, councillors were1
greatly surprised oii Saturday at the know
ledge that-a demand had been made to Mr.
15. Hyett, the city solicitor, for payment of
the costs. It will b(? remembered that, on
Friday last, at the council meeting, it was
decided, when the taxed bill of costs was re
ceived to consult the city solicitor to ascer
tain if the councillors individually were re-'i
sponsible for the payment of the costs or the
ratepayers as a body. No question about the
non-payment of the money was raised, and
councillors left the chamber' under the im-i
pression that even Cr. Carolin was satisfied i
with this arrangement. When the city solici
tor recieved a communication from Mr. Mur
phy, Cr. Carolin's solicitor, oil Saturday, the
mayor hurriedly called councillors together,
and. they deliberated privately. The result
of the conference was, that the ^noney will I
most probably be paid at once by Mr. Hyett, [
but if it turns out that the costs will.have to
be borne by the councillors individually, a
refund will be made to the general revenue.
The-bill, before it reached the taxing of
ficer, stood at dC'1'7/2/9. lie disallowed items
amounting to .£26/6. The balance payable
was £20/16/9, but the taxing fee of 15/6 had
to be added, making the amount ,£21/12/3.
