COMRADES OF THE M.ST
GERMANS LIKE SHEEP.
HERDED BY DOGS.
LONDON, December -17.
Admiral Sir David Beatty, on board the
New York, in a farewell address to the
Sixth' American Battle Squadron, said: —
I know you, like your British comrades, .
were bitterly disappointed to see the
enemy's great ships coming in like «heep
herded by dogs without an effort
on anybody's part, but it was
a day everyone could be proud
of. The prestige of the -3Tand Fleet was
so high that it was sufficient - 'to compel
the enemy to surrender without striking a
blowi. I alwayB had misgivings, But
when the American battle squadron joined
the British I knew the Germans would
throw up their hands. It was the straw
which broke the camel's back. I hope the
Americans will never forget their 'com-
rades of the mist.' Dunng the year ia
the North Sea the British and American
navies have learnt to know each other.
