POPPY DAY
November 11 will bring around again
the anniversary of the day on which
the Armistice was declared, and
throughout the allied countries it will
be remembered as 'Poppy Day,' the
red poppy of Flanders being now re
cognised as the international memor
ial flower to be worn. Armistice Day
is recognised as the soldiers' day, and
on that day right throughout the
British Empire, and in every allied
country, from which soldeirs left for
the great war, the little silk poppies
will be sold by the different soldiers'
organisations and the proqeeds used
to augment amelioration funds, which
have been applied in -the past to such
work and relief as is encessary in
the interests of returned men, and
the dependants of those who were
left on the field.
In order that the appeal may be
even a greater success than it was
last year, and the day firmly estab
lished as a memorial poppy day which
has been accepted throughout the
British Empire and allied countries,
the poppy has been copyrighted by
the various returned soldier organi
sations throughput these countries,
and apart from raising funds for re
lief and other purposes amongst re
turned soldiers in our own country,
the big principle is to establish the
day on which the poppy will be worn
in memory of those who have made
the supreme sacrifice.
As far as this State is qoncerned
it is desired that on November 11
everyone should wear a poppy, and
the assistance of all sub-branches of
the League is sought to make this an
accomplished fact. A little organisa
tion will bring it about and there is
no doubt that willing assistance will
be given by ladies' auxiliaries, and
patriotic societies, which have always
proved in a practical manner their
sympathy with the . soldier.
This appeal if energetically con
ducted, will be of considerable assis
tance as although the great idea is
to establish the day, sub-branqhes will
be able to add to their amelioration
funds, and carry on with better ad
vantage the good work they are doing
It is proposed that the poppies should
be sold at 1/- each, 9d. of which will
be retained by the sub-branch, the
State Executive is entitled to 3d., Id.
of which will go to Melbourne.
Large poppies may also be had from
this office.— D. M. Benson, State sec
retary.
It is understood that the R.S.L. in
tend to make Poppy Day in Bunbury
a big day and will probably hold a
service at the War Memorial.
