NIAGARA DISPUTE.
Both Sides Awaiting
Developments.
Support from American
Seamen.
SYDNEY, Wednesday.
Should any attempt be made to
transfer cargo from the idle
Niagara to an American ship, rapid
development in the dispute is ex
pected. It was stated on the
waterfront to-day that a message
had been received from the San
Francisco headquarters of the
Pacific Coast Longshoremen's
Union, stating that no cargo taken
to that port under such conditions
would be handled.
The American Seamen's Union also
is said to be sympathetic toward the
Vancouver strike committee, and this
may influence some of the seamen on
the American ships trading to Aus
tralia.
Matter For All Members.
Both the Union Steamship Co. and
the Seamen's Union are awaiting fur
ther developments in the dispute, and
negotiations for a settlement may be
carried a step further to-morrow, al
though it is stated on behalf of the
union that no meeting will be held, as
there is nothing further to put before
the men.
The dispute is now a matter for the
whole membership of the union. It
was stated to-day that probably it
would be discussed later in the week,
at a stronger gathering of seamen. It
is expected that the union will not at
tempt to reopen negotiations at this
stage, but it is pointed out that the
way is still open for the owners of
the Niagara to approach the officials of
the union with further suggestions for
peace.
General Conference Mooted.
The Australasian Council of Trade
Unions has net yet taken any action
in the dispute, but when the cooks and
stewards are paid offil some steps to
secure a general conference of all the
maritime unions with the owners may
be taken.
A strong guard of detectives and
more than 20 uniformed police officers
were posted on the wharf when the
Mariposa sailed to-day. Strict dis
erimniniation was exercised in admit
ting people to the wharf. The Niagara
to-day was moved by tugs to a berth
at Woolloomooloo, where the cargo for
Vancouver will be discharged.
