Stopping The Leak
|JAWKESBURY River County Council has
made a wise decision in arranging an up
river survey to locate sources of Noogoora burr
infestation arriving in this district with flood ;
waters. The fact that the pest only made its
presence felt here. after a series of floods, and
its original appearance in the district was along
the river, indicates that such sources exist. It

menace of the weed is not recognised by the
local government bodies concerned, or it is
growing on undeveloped country and the coun
cils are disregarding its presence in their areas.
Until all such growths are located and treated
the tremendous task faced by the County
Council, in coping with the spread of the burr
in this district, will be a recurring one. At best,
it will be merely holding the menace at bay, if :
further seedlings are going to float into the
district from upriver sources. Only when these
'contamination areas' are cleaned up, will
stern and rigorous methods by the County !
Council in this district be justified. One does
not stop a leak by mopping up the flow.
