Some Personalities in
Civic Affairs
HHHE Mayor of Fremantle (Mr. F. E.
?*? Gibson) looks like setting a not
able record for municipal service to
the City of Fremantle. He was elected
unopposed for a further term at the
recent 9elections, and there are indica
tions of his holding that position for a
good while yet.
The manner in which Mr. Gibson
has performed his duties has been
commended in many quarters. In ad
dition to carrying out his civic duties,
le presides over the functions of the
Fremantle Municipal Tramways and
Electric Lighting Board, and takes a
prominent part generally in all mat
ters concerning the welfare of the
Fremantle district.

1VTR. G. Mengler, re-elected Mayor of
Claremont, has entered upon his
ninth consecutive year in that office.
Apart from the performance of a big
programme of works during his term
as Mayor, the Municipality erected and
furnished new Council Chambers at a
cost of about £5000.
Despite the fact that 45 per cent, of
its area is unratable property, Clare
mont has made excellent progress with
Mr. Mengler at the head of affairs, and
another year of activity is expected.

rFHE Town Clerk of East FremantJe
x (Mr. H. H. Parker, J.P.) holds
what is probably a unique record in
the history of local government in this
State. When East Fremantle munici
pality was gazetted in 1897, he was
appointed Town Clerk and he has held
the Jposition ever since. He has seen
the municipality grow until today it
boasts the proud title of the Port's
garden suburb.

THE secretary of the Melville Road
Board (Mr. E. C. Tompkins) recei
ved many congratulations at the offi
cial opening on Friday of the board's
reconstructed office at Bicton. The
chairman (Mr. E. F. Edwardes) and
other speakers referred to the efficient
manner in which Mr. Tompkins had
performed his duties and to the many
occasions on which he had given his
services to improve the lot of the less
happily situated residents of the dis
trict.
Mr. Edwardes said that in the carry
ing out of the board's works pro
gramme, Mr. Tompkins had ^converted
existing machinery for bitumen work,
thus saving the district hundreds of
pounds, and the cost of his bitumen
work compared more than favorably
with that which the board had pre
viously had done in the district.
