Maiden Hurdlers in Action at Headquarters : : Tomorrow's Meetings
VENETIAN KING, A NOVICE. GIVES
GOOD DISPLAY
King Sylvan and Diplomacy in
Dashing Trial
SAMADEN IN FORM ON FLAT
Most of the horses who will contest the maiden hurdle
race at the Canning Park in meeting on Saturday and several
other newcomers to the ranks of jumpers schooled over the
hurdles at headquarters this morning.
Their exhibitions provided the chief interest ot the
training operations, for trials on the flat were restricted
because of the heavy going on the sand.
The best displays were those of King Sylvan and
Diplomacy.
Kins Sylvan (Saligari) jumped three
sets of battens fast and dashingly. The
gelding has not yet been entered for
a jumping race, but when he is pro-
duced he should do well, for he has
impressed more than any other novice
jumper in training.
Billara (Chandler) jumped three
hurdles well, but landed badly each
time, and was slow to get into his
stride and away from the obstacles.
He develops plenty of speed on
the flat, and is improving, but
may want an outing or two in a
hurdle race before revealing his
best.
Prudent Poet (A. Campbell) cleared
six hurdles. He jumped cleanly and
confidently and maintained an even
pace between jumps.
VENETIAN KING ATTRACTS
Venetian King (Saligari) was given
his first jumping lesson. He was given
a lead over three hurdles by Ergin
Key (Butler), and shaped well. His
companion cleared the first flight a
couple of lengths ahead of him, but at
the second obstacle Venetian King
jumped to the front. He got in too
close to the last and lost ground, but
cleared it cleverly and landed only a
length behind the other.
Venetian King is fast on the flat,
and his showing over jumps to-
day indicates that he will do well
as a hurdler.
The chestnut has been fractious at
the barrier lately, and the jumping
should give him more confidence and
improve his manners.
Diplomacy (Anderson) led Declarah
(A. Campbell) and Brown Con (Cock-
burn) in a school over three hurdles,
and Declarah continued on to jump
three more flights alone. Diplomacy
jumped with his usual dash, and is an
improved horse. Declarah also jumped
well, although he is not a free mover,
and had to be hard ridden at each
obstacle. Brown Con showed pace, but
was inclined to be careless, and struck
the second jump hard.
Cureboy (Butler) recorded a fin-
ished display jumping six hurdles.
He took each obstacle in his stride,
and maintained a fast even pace be-
tween them. He is a big, strong
gelding, who should prove a useful
hurdler, providing that he pos-
sesses stamina.
Winter Prince (Wagener) jumped
six hurdles in fine style. He showed
plenty of confidence. The gelding has
been racing well on the flat, and is in
great fettle.
SAND TRACK WORK-OUTS
Air Lord (Corry) and Lenarran (L.
Armanasco) put up the most impres-
sive half-mile sprint on the sand track.
They began at the five furlongs post,
going at even time for the first fur-
long, but came home fast the last half-
mile in 55.
Samaden (Tulloh), who is un-
dergoing a sound preparation for
the big events at the goldfields
carnival, worked freely for six fur-
longs in 1.27. The chestnut is
rapidly getting back to form and
should be very fit with another
outing or two.
Obliteration (Gilbert) worked well
for seven furlongs, galloping freely
and coming home the last five in 1.12.
Regarra (Harrison) sprinted half a
mile in 56½, and Noogee (H. King)
went a furlong more in 1.11.
Eaton's Son (D. Campbell) ran
three furlongs in 43. Virgin Wing
(Leonard) and Poikilos (Dodd) went
at a strong three-quarter pace to-
gether for six furlongs.
Swanera (Peck) was in front of
Silveral (Forth) at the end of five fur-
longs try-out in 1.9. Agrion's Charm
(McLachlan) was associated in the
gallop, but fell between the three and
two furlongs posts.
Marcodava (Ellis) came up the hill
going well at the end of an even time
seven furlongs try-out. Flaming Star
(King) was restricted to some easy
pace work, and Edovara (Hutchison)
and Agrius (Shaw) went together at
three-quarter pace for five furlongs.
Horses allotted sound working gal-
lops were Insolent (Luck), Tea Party
(Davies), Gandhi (McLachlan), Beggar
Town (Whitbread). Beetaloo (Chand-
ler), Crester (Forth), Cerimon (Tul-
loh), Patingo (N. Armanasco), Don's
Whiskey (Peck), Grosio (Humphries),
Desert Hero (Corry), Albert Park (L.
Armanasco) and Fyrn (Connell).
Among those restricted to light
tasks were Breakers (Luck), Sipal
(Corry), Volauvent (Watts), Stealth
(George), Muflon (Morley), Balkan
Prince (Carter), Earl Cunje (Arm-
strong), Sarchinate (N. Armanaseo),
Hazelwood (King), Yeringa (Mc-
Mahon), Saltate (Luck) and Daucrest
(Read).
