Record
Works
Programme
CANBERRA, Fri: The State]
Premiers today agreed to a re
vision of the national works
programme to make it pro
vide mainly for works in the
immediate future.
Acting Co-ordinator-General
of Works L. J. Price told the
Premiers that the national
works programme submitted
this year had reached the
record figure of £977,000,000
covering more than 8271 pro
jects.
Thirty per cent, or £377,000,
000 of the works were ready
to begin quickly in the event
of any economic recession.
But, although there had been
some fear of a recession last
year, it was not present now.
Many of the projects in the
programme were small ones of
less than £50,000 which would
be controlled by local authori
ties. Many others were nebu
lous, long-range projects, for
which there were no detailed
estimates.
Mr. Price suggested that the
States keep listed these small
projects to cost under £50,000
and submit only other larger
works for the programme
when their launching within
three years was possible.
The Premiers agreed that
Mr. Price and State Co
ordinators should confer to
work out the works pro
gramme on these principles.
