More than' 100 boilermakers
and fitters at the East Perth
Loco Sheds have given the
Railway Department 14 days
in which to meet certain de
mands on amenities before
rney meet again to consider
further action.'
The men, who are acting in
dependently of their unions,
have told District Loco Super
intendent S. Giles that their
final decision will be made at
a mass meeting on September
29.
Action Deferred
At lunchtime today, they re
ceived a report from represen
tatives who had discussed
complaints with Mr. Giles and
decided to defer any further
action.
The men have complained
of inadequate washing facili
ties, the dirty state of clean
ing pits, and what they call
an unfair system of promo
tion.
'Showers and wash troughs
are hopelessly inadequate for
the number of men using
them. The hot-water -system
is faulty, despite repeated re
quests to have something
done,' a spokesman for the
men said after today's meet
ing.
. He said that many legiti
mate complaints had also been
made over junior tradesmen
being promoted over fully
qualified men with years more ;
service.
