Miss . Isabel Irvine, B.A., of the Edu
cation Department, returned by the'
Largs Bay today 'from a holiday trip to
England and the Continent. \
Captain J. E. 'Turner, of the Fremantle
pilot staff, returned this morning on the
Largs Bay from long leave spent 'iri '
England. A depressing sight, he said, ,
was the number of ships, large and
small, out of commission in every port he
visited.
A civic reception will be tendered by
the Lord Mayor and councillors of the
City of Perth to their Excellencies the
Governor-General and Lady Isaacs atth#
Perth Town Hall on Monday next, Oc
tober 5, at 12 noon. Orchestral selec
tions will be rendered from 11.15 a.in. (

Majesties the King and Queen, accom
panied by the Duke of Gloucester and
Prince George, left Balmoral Castle,
Scotland, by a special train yesterday
afternoon for London. They were due
to reach Buckingham Palace shortly
after 8 a^n. today.
The death occurred this morning after
a short illness of Mrs. Wilson, wife1 of
Dr. J. A. Campbsll Wilson, of Wihgfield
avenue, Crawley. The two sons of the
family, one of whom has joined tha
staff of the Perth Hospital and the
other is studying medicine in Mel
bourne, arrived in Perth last week after
news of their mother's illness.
A Sydney telegram states that after a
long illness Mr. E. R. Abigail, solicitor,
died at his home at Bondi yesterday,
aged 61. He was one of the best known
personalities in the Law Courts of New
South Wales. Although he died weal
thy, he began by driving a grocer's cart,
and while in that occupation secured th«
B.A. degree in 1896. He was admitted
as a solicitor in 1899, and made rapid
progress. ' .
Sir Austen Chamberlain (First Lord
of the Admiralty), in the House of Com
mons yesterday, said that Admiral Sir
Michael Hodges, who was in charge of
the Atlantic Fleet, had been advised
by his doctors that he must remain in
hospital for some weeks, and that his
complete recovery would require a con
siderable time. In these circumstances -
the Admiral had asked to be relieved of
his command and the Board of Admir
alty had with great regret acceded to
his request. Admiral Sir John Kelly
has been appointed to succeed Admiral
Hodges.
Messrs. P. Bignell (manager), E. Hill,
'A. s. M'Clintock, H. Ruse, T. K. Spencer,
and G. E. Duggan (members of the
Western Australian bowling team),
which attended the recent Australian
Bowling Council carnival at Brisbane, re
turned this morning on the Karoola. Mr.
Bignell said that the trip had been tho
roughly enjoyable, hospitality being ex
tended to the bowlers at each of the
capital cities. 'A number of the bowlers
subsequently toured the northern dis
trict of New South Wales, and were
successful in three of the four engkgc-:
ments there. Another party was shown
over the harbor bridge at Sydney. ..
