The friends of Mr. P. W. H. Thiel
will be glad to learn that he has made
a good recovery from his recent serious
illness.
Lord Jellicoe has returned to Lon
don from a health tour in Madeira.
He announces he is relinquishing public
activities, including the presidency of
the British Legion because 'keeping well
will be a whole-time job.'
A Calcutta message says that Sir
Francis Jackson yesterday morning
ceremoniously handed over the Gover
norship of Bengal to his successor, Sir
John Anderson, on the latter's arrival
in - Calcutta, and immediately Sir Fran
cis left for home.
A London message announces the
death of the actor Mr. Norman M'Kinnell,
'who was in Australia with Dion Bouci
cault. Mr. M'Kinnell. a native of Kirk
cudbrightshire, originally intended to fol
low his father's profession of engineer,
but gave up the idea and joined the
stage. He made his first appearance on
the stage at Clacton-on-Sea in July,
1894, and made his London debut at the-
Elephant and Castle Theatre in 1895 as
John. in 'Davy Garrick' and Harry Sel
bourne in 'Hook . and Eye,' was three
years, with H. Beerbohm Tree^ In 1903
was engaged by Sir Henry Irving to sup
port him as Nello della Pietri in 'Dante'
at Drury-lans. He was author of 'The
Bishop's Candlesticks' founded on an
Incident in 'Les Miserables' and of
'Dick'3 Sister.' His favorite part was
Morrell in 'Candida.' He was 62 years
of age.. ,
