COWLEY'S EASY WIN IN COMO SWIM
Victory With Hundred Yards to Spare
4
EXCITING TUSSLE FOR SECOND PLACE
K. Cowley, the City swimmer,- had an easy victory In the Swim
Through Como this afternoon.
Passing the beacon about a quarter of a mile from the finish he was
well out from the field, and was Certain of victory. He swam off the
9.30 mark, and was soon in a handy position. Over the final stages of
the long race, which was conducted in rough water, he drew away from
the rest of the field to win by a big margin.
There was a splendid tussle between half a dozen competitors for
second place, the judge placing T. Manning (A.N.A.), who went off the
same mark as the winner, second, a-nd j. s. Horrocks, a representative of
;r. the Como Club, third.
The choppy itatae of the water made
the long swim a real endurance- ton
tcst — probably as much so as the Swim
Through Perth, though the latter was
more than twice the distance. Only
fohr were deterred by the heavy wafer,
Hooper, Hovtson, Wigmore and Cuporn
failing to take the water. r
At Coffey Point the long field had
closed up considerably, and Roy Thomp
son, the well-known distance performer
who won the race last year, was going
very well. Off Point Heathcote the
heavy rou&li water was making itself felt.
Pooley was going towards the front, and
Mills had ? also moved up well. Cowley,
Mho started off 9imin., was swimm ng
strongly in second place behind Miss de
Lacy.
Entering the open water he was on
terms with her, and being nearer the
Como side was in a better position.- Be
hind this pair were D.««»n and Hannah,
with Mills, Goudie and Manning promi
nent amongst the others. Cowley lurned
at the beacon a hundred yards ahead of
M.iss de Lacy, who was closely attended
by Dyson and Hannah. Over the final
t-tretch Cowley continued to draw away,
r.nd when he touched was mere than a
hundred yards in front of half u dozen
swimmers, who were making a greas
fight for second. For- a wh2a it seemed
as if Manning and Horrocks must, dead
heat, but the former was a bare touch
ahead of the Como swimmer.
