DRIVING
Twenty - year - old Joseph
Henry Jodrill, laborer, was to
day fined £20 with £1/11/6
costs, for having driven a
truck under the influence of
liquor. .
A further charge, that of dangerous
driving, was later withdrawn at the
request of the prosecuting sergeant,
Sergeant Lynes.
Jodrill's driving licence was also can
celled for 12 months.
Late on the evening of January 29 a
man who was waiting for a tram at
the corner of Loftus and Newcastle
streets saw a utility truck 'being driven
east along Newcastle-street at 'an ex
cessive speed.'
The man boarded an east-bound
tram, and °n reaching Fitzgerald
street saw that the same truck had
become involved in an accident,
having rammed some shops near
the corner. It was Jodrill's truck.
. POLICE TESTS
In the opinion of the officer in
charge of the Central Police Station on
the night of the accident Jodrill was
unable to pass satisfactorily the
'matches test' and the 'walking-the-
chalk-line test.' He was under the
influence of liquor. .
Constables and eyewitnesses at
the scene of the smash said Jodrill
could hardly stand after the acci
dent. Someone had given him
sweets to' sweeten his breath, but
the smell of liquor was still very
pronounced.
Mr. F. W. Dorney, who appeared for
Jodrill, submitted that after an acci
dent of the description his client had
been in anyone would be unsteady.
He suggested that Jodrill had
passed through the tests with fly
ing colors.
