THE PERTH HIGHLAND BRIGADE,
Among tho Scotsmen of Perth muoh
interest is being aroused regarding the
formation of a oorps of Highlanders!
which will be attached to the local mili
tary forces. Tho idea has been mooted
fox Borne time, but it was only recently
that tho Caledonian Society could give
to the movement some tangible form.
The chief of the society, Superintendent
Lapsley, took the matter enthusiastic
ally to heart, and tlie result was that
on Thursday night a petition was signed
by 07 intending members asking Colonel
Ricardo to permit tho formation of the
oorps. This morning a representa
tive of 'The1 Daily News' called on Mr.
Lapsley and asked him what had been
doue with reference to tbo petition.
'Oh, you're lucky,' said he ; 'I've just
come from the Commandant, so I cau
givo you some information. This morn
ing at 11 o'olook Captain Cassell aud
Messrs. Wood, Ferguson, Brebbor,
Clarke, Benson, and myself, roprosent
iug the society, waited upon Colonel
Ricardo and handed him the petition
asking him to consider tho re
quests contained in it. Tho Com
mandant expressed his gratification
at the successful issuo of the movement,
and told us that nothing wouWTbe want
ing on his part to mako tho Perth
Comerons an efficient company of tlio
Commonwealth forces.'

'Yes. In proof of the Commandants
desire to assist n's, ho promised to enrol
tho men Btraight away, and the reoruits
have been ordered to parade on Tues
day night, The Tegular drill nights have
been fixed as Tuesdays and Fridays, and
as we have a drill sergeant who is still
connected with tho Oamerons, the corps
should soon be going strong.'

ready between 80 and 90 names have
been handed in from men up to tho
standard measurement, wo ought to
have no difficulty in geltiug a company
of splendid physique.'
