ANNUAL CONEEllENCE.
SECOND DAY.
The annual conference of the United
Commercial Travellers' Association of Aus-
tralasia was continued at tho club's rooms,
Freinuntlo, this morning. Mr. W. B. Gil
fllton (president) occupied the chair, and
thoro wus a full attendance of delegates.
ORPHAN SCHOOLS;
The sub-committee appointed at the pre
vious conference to report on the advisable
nessof establishing orphan schools in con
nection with the association stated that
practically nothing had been done Whereby
a collective roport could be prepared for
consideration at the conference, and as
there was no urgent need for 'the establish
ment of such sonools it; was 'recommended
that the mattor 'should be- deferred 'to the
next conference. It was also recommended
that a sub-committee should be appointed
to preparo a roport for coTigideratioti by
tho incoming executive.
Mr, Marsden (Tasmania) said although at
present Ho could1 not see that there was
any necessity for such an institution it
should be kept prominently before tlio exe
cutive.
Mr. M'Pherson (N.8.W.) suggested, as he
wns able to visit Englund shorilywhe might
Qo ablo to gather information that would
be useful to a future conference. -
Mr. Jack (Queensland) suggested that the
scheme might bo fairly started, and then
they could gradually get the machinery for
its development. He moved — 'That a fund
for the .assistance and maintenance of or
phan children of commercial trnvellers be
inaugurated forthwith» subject to tho ap
proval of the affiliated association, and that
ii Bub-committeo bo appointod for the pur
pose of drawing up a workable 'scheme to
bo submitted to the next conference '
Messrs, Marsden and Buring supported
the motion, which was carried.
CONVALESCENT HOME,
The affiliated association forwarded corre
spondence _ stating that the. proposal for
the establishment of a convalescent home
was premature.
AN OFFICIAL HANDBOOK.
The question of tho compilation of an
official handbook was taken- into considera
tion, and in tho discussion it was shown
that the issue luid boon delayed owing to
a loss sustained through an insufficiency' of
advertisements. The secretary suggested
that the publication might be made much
more attractive and useful if the recommen
dation of the snb-committoo that an extra
£20 should bo spent on f.\e handbook were
adopted, On the motion of Mr. Lukin it
was decided that the oxtra expenditure
should be incurred, and that tho handbook
should be published on Juno 1.
8AMPLE:ROOMs'lN HOTELS. „
The affiliated association reported that
active steps woro being taken w carry out
the suggestion of tho last conference that
botelkoepors who granted the use of their
sumplo-rooins to retail travellers who sold
goods in the town should bo struck' off the
list of the association hotels.
TRAVELLING CONCESSIONS.
The secretary stated that ho had inter
viewed sovoral representatives of the steam
ship companies, and ho understood that at
the next meeting of the Steamship-owners'
Association ail effort would be made to con
fine the granting of rebates to applicants
who wore tho badge of the association. Mr.
Marsden stated that in Tasmania tlie
woaring of the badge was insisted upon by
tlie steamship companies, tlio railways, tho
hotelkeepers, and wherever concessions
were guanted, In some cases efforts had
boon made to break alVay from this rule,
but thoy hud boon promptly dealt with,
