Favorite Tetbury Wins
Goodwood Handicap
MAIDEN SNEER
GETS A DOUBLE;
TREMNEY SCORES
After a neck and neck struggle the length of the
straight, Tetbury narrowly defeated Great Sign in the
Goodwood Handicap, principal race on the Goodwood
Race Club's programme today.
Tetbury, an even money favorite, was at the same
price as Tremney, who beat three others in the Plate.
Sneer, who won his first race today, the Maiden Handi
? oap,t repeated in the May Stakes.. .Hutchison, his rider in the
Stakes^ also completed a double. His previous winner was
Pancratic.
Mancosa narrowlv won the Welter.
Because of indisposition, the W.A.
T.C. stipendiary steward, Mr. D. C.
Braham was unable to officiate at to
day's meeting at Goodwood.
The Maiden Handicap field had not
gone far when it resolved itself into a
race between the favorite, Sneer (6 to
4. 5 to 2 and 6 to 4), and Lady Rays
(3's, 2's and 5 .to 2). The pair were
well clear for most of the way, and in
the run home Sneer did the better to
beat Lady Rays, while Louvarissa came
home well to snatch third place from
Silvania (4's, 5's and 4's) on the post.
Sneer's win was generally an
ticipated, for the gelding had Vun
a good second to Fine Spin at his
last start at Headquarters.
Lady Rays, having her second start
in this State, did well, and is bene
fiting from racing. Silvania looked the
likely third-place getter at the top of
the straight, but Louvarissa was just
a shade too good for him in the last
few strides.
Old English (7's and 10's) was last,
a long .way out of his ground early,
but once he got his balance he finished
on well, though at no stage did he look
a winner. The short distance, coupled
with the fast . pace set, were against
him.
TREMNEY BEATS POOR FIELD
'Three withdrawals from the Good
wood Plate were . Old Story, Flaming
Star and Mons Talisman, and a most
disappointing field of four went to the
post. Tremney, an even money favor
ite, justified her position in -the 'betting
by leading practically all the way arid
beating Maybe (2's -and 5 to 2). with
Ganemedes (2's and 5 to 2) third, and
the burly Prince Cunje (6's and 10's)
last ' ' ? ' '
Tremney certainly had an easy
win, but her task would have been
more difficult had Maybe not hung
in when commencing a fast move
at the top of the straight. The
gelding was straightened,, but valu
able time and distance were lost.
All four starters were aged gallopers,
and two of them, Prince Cunje and
Maybe, were having their first runs
since coming in from spells. Evens
about Tremney were thus a rather
good price. .. , ? i.-iauJL
PANCRATIC'S PURSE
Never far from the leaders' iri the
Goodwood Purse, Pancratic joined the
front bunch on the turn, into the
straight and won an interesting race
from the topweight Rollovant and
Melody Lad. ??
With 31b. overweight Pancratic was
in receipt of 251b- from Rollovant and
the difference iri weights stood' him
in good stead when it came to the final
tussle. The winner, who has won only
a couple of races since coming here
from Sydney, where he was bought as
a yearling, was in the market at 10's
and 12's, but his backers were few.
Rollovant (3's, 2's and 5 to 2)
was favorite, and he made 3. great
effort, sharing the pace with Cari
oca and being beaten only by a
lightweight.
Melody Lad was a 20 to 1 chance.
Wynbring , (7's, 8's and 7's) came home
strongly from a fair way back and
headed the .unplaced lot. Swanbee
(5's, 6s, 3's and 7 to 2) was among the
leading lot into the straight but she
could not come on. Premiere (5's) did
not flatter. Mantology (10's and 6's)
looked a possible place-getter three
from home but he weakened.
Carioca faded in the run home. v
FAVORITE'S CLOSE CALL
Tetbury looked a 'good thing' for
the Goodwood Handicap, in which the
King's Cup winner met a field of
moderate quality. Plenty of 6 to 4 was
available early and he started at evens.
The favorite, after trailing the pace
maker Great Sigm got up in the last
few stridees to beat that gelding, while
Regarra (7's and 12's) was third. ?
Tetbury conceded Great Sign about
three1 lengths' start over the last couple
of furlongs and his backers got many
a thrill as he gradually bridged the
gap and finally passed Great Sign.
Tetbury was ridden by W. Dil
lon, who won his first race on a
metropolitan course since return
ing from India. He won races at
the recent Pinjarra fixture.
Great Sign (4's, 10's and 8's) at
tempted to steal the race and failed
by only a long head to do so.
Thiasrooma (4's to 10's) finished
fourth. Dilemma (3's to 5's), who re
cently returned to racing after a pro
longed absence through breakdown,
pulled up none too well, his rider dis
mounting and leading, him back to the
enclosure after the race. Beetaloo (7 s,
5's and 6's) and Winged Eagle (7's.
10's and 8's) finished among the un
placed lot. They have not long come
in from spells and racing will improve
them.
Before the starter could dispatch the
field he experienced a good deal of
trouble in getting them into line,
Thiasrooma and Regarra particularly,
and also Beetaloo. giving displays of
waywardness.
SNEER'S DOUBLE
Owner-trainer R- Burns showed good
judgment in saddling up Sneer, the
Maiden Handicap winner, for the May
Stakes for the gelding won again beat
ing Tekona and Wembley,
Extra weight to the extent of 61b.
for his win in the first event today
brought his weight to 7.8. He won
nicely. Advantaged by number one
pdsition at the barrier he was .always
prominent.
N. Hutchison, his rider, brought
up his second success for the day
also, his other win being on Pan
cratic. Sneer finished at 5's in the
betting after 6's and 7's could have
been had about his chances.
Both Tekona and Wembley wer,e at
long prices. Tekona paying £6 6s for
a place.
The favorite Tetreen (3's, 9 to 2 and
7 to 2) battled on into fourth place.
.Amorluz (4's, 3's and 4's) weakened
in the closing stages as did also Heroic
Duke (4's, 7 to 2 and 9s to 2), Heroic
Duke did not hit the front at any stage.
Alikoom (10's and 8's) finished fifth
STABLE DOUBLE
Tetbury's stablemate Mancosa scored
in the Final Handicap from Jolly Fair
and Nirimba in the best- race of the
day. The field was well bunched with
the exception of Aguenor, Nirimba and
Yodelate. ..? ,r
In the straight Mancosa (2's, 7 to
2 and 3's) finished fast and just
caught Jolly Fair (7's and 8's) on
the post. Nirimba also came home
'well and ran third.
The favorite was Big Head (5 to 2.
5 to 4 and 7 to 4)'. He took the lead
after going about a couple of furlongs
but he weakened in the last hundred
yards and missed a place. Lenarran
(4's, 5's and 9 to 2) weakened. Ague
nor ' finished close' to the placegetters.
